I've had people tell me that I shouldn't use the word dumb and instead use stupid. Dumb is a slur that was used to insult people that were deaf/blind/mute.

Does dumb also get censored?

But what if I am dumb and HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE.

everyone is so triggered at the mere suggestion that these pages be removed. you’re not even defending funny pages here y’all! go look at them! why do you care so much about their continued existence? i promise you there’s worse things out there than some people wanting a wiki cleaned up of old garbage.

The pages should absolutely be removed. They add no value to the wiki and they aren't funny.

I'm just not a fan of language policing, especially in cases where there's not really any substance behind it. Is there anyone here who can honestly say they've never heard someone make a comment and immediately thought, "this person must not be very bright"? Having a word for that is useful, and for some reason that particular condition has a string of banned terms attached to it.

Oh I'm not mad at all and I did not make this up. You can Google it, dumb was a slur against deaf/mute/blind people. People are starting to tell people not to use it.

In 5 years my posts will have been edited so that d-word is "HELP I'M STUCK IN 2026"

IMO that word is warranted in many cases.

I also think certain other medical conditions rank very highly within the already tiny xi community, and that's how we get discussions like these.

Discussion itself is infinitely more hilarious than the decidedly unfunny wiki pages.

oh also there's some other stuff that isn't technically a slur but sure is cringe as *** in this day and age:
https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/The_History_of_Final_Fantasy_XI/2005

obviously I'm not searching text in images but uhhhhhh yeah haha "funny" yeah haha is it 2006

FYI I changed this just now for the sensitive crowd (maybe two people?). The comparison image used was directly from the BG forum and uploaded when I made 2005 history in 2022. I didn't directly make this image on purpose, dispite popular belief.

For the record, this is the FIRST time anyone has ever said they had an issue with this image too. The page was viewed tens of thousands of times.

https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/File:Cloak_Icon_Changes.gif

Additional FYI on "Guild", its a copypasta from Urbandictionary. https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Guild entry 7. Dont forget to flag it over there. Posted in 2006. Removed the R word for the sensitive people.

You can Google it, dumb was a slur against deaf/mute/blind people.

"Lame" used to be (might still be in some cultures) a reference to someone who was crippled, disabled, or in some way deficient in the use of one or more of their limbs (the Bible uses this term often). Nowadays, the word just means something isn't "cool".

Languages change over time, so there is a need to be cognizant of how things are currently interpreted to some people or cultures, as it could be offensive. I can get behind that part. However, there is a real problem in society with policing what words people use. It's less about the word actually being offensive to a group, and more about just telling people what they can and cannot die. It's gotten really weird now.

I am fine with removing the mentally deficient page. The only reason it existed was because of the 1-119 guide which spicy axed anyway, so it serves no further purpose. In fact, itll trigger him off if we delete it so lets do it just for that.

When I complained about the private server pages on a wiki for a sub based video game (effectively piracy btw, which Square Enix will never have anything to do with you due to it), the phalanx was strong.

Someone spazzed out over some words, instant action. I see how it is.

I am somewhat joking, I don't like them being there but I understand it's a fair amount of work to remove them.

My two cents on private server pages:

At first I was very against all private server things on the wiki. My mindset changed when the idea behind letting these exist was that private servers have, in fact, brought people into retail hence supporting the game. Whether it be from at least giving it a try with the free trial, or actually paying the subscription.

Overall I believe it has increased traffic on the wiki with more edits and more contributions to both retail and private servers.

If Square Enix would recognize BG was a resource officially, I would have a different mindset. Because we have to use word of mouth or googlefu, I believe there really is no harm if no pages interject each other.

Square should really pay you all for FFXIAH and bgwiki. I was at a fan fest where they pulled data from FFXIAH for a trivia/price guessing game on stage.

This is both good and bad. While I respect the increase in traffic and edits, there becomes an issue when private server-specific information is added onto retail pages. Although it happens extremely infrequently, it does occur and I have seen editors forced to undo changes because of it. Who knows how much of it slips through the cracks?

As for SE recognizing BG, their community reps did once tweet out the link to the Intermediate RoE Guide (iirc), though that is a far cry from official recognition.

Does anyone remember the fansite links on the shitty POL website? That would be nice to have community resource links.

*** their dumbass third party policies, just embrace that most of us are still supporting the game. I do not think it is unfair to say that without places like the wikis (all languages) and FFXIAH that the game would probably have went offline by now.

I see that the aging ffxi players are evolving quickly from this:

to this:

Maybe paying attention to the wiki, initiating a few drives to update and shore up content, get the old guides re-configured for new players, and generally pruning old, bad jokes that have not aged well would help the current spate of players.

There would be more to interact with if s-e produced more content. They've kinda given up at this point and just throw us the occasional bone. Sortie and Limbus are the only talking points nowadays, and most of the discussion revolves around how grindy s-e made them rather than the events themself. They're very shallow events so there just isn't a lot else to say.

There have been numerous edits on both wikis from malicious entities trying to coax their private server admins into making changes that benefit them (incorrect recipes/HQ results and more). I feel like we don't need a single edit from anyone who is not playing or sourcing information directly from the retail game. I also don't think we need to do a single thing to help promote malicious actors in the community and the server with the most representation is banned from other community places for valid reasons.

As far as the concern over offensive language, I feel like there's a major difference in why it's on the wiki.

If it's recording historical widespread occurrence or usage, it is fine to be represented as an accurate depiction of the game's past or the community.

If it's someone's "joke" thrown into a guide or wiki page, then it could/should be edited without much discussion.

Serious take on the topic: I have had more luck trying to understand why I react to things a certain way and what I can do about that, rather than expect other people to conform to the behavior I want them to. YMMV

49% seems low, bg is estimated by Altana to be 2,000,000% better than ffxiclopedia (pronounced fandom)
