Why Does BG Wiki Have Admin-protected Slurs?

The "Meme" category on BG wiki contains a lot of admin-protected (uneditable) pages:

Among these are "Guild" and, of course, the FFXI meme that everyone totally knows, "Mentally Deficient". Both of which have the r-slur on them:

I suggested removing the entirety of the Meme category over on the suggestions page, and got the nebulous reply that
"BG mods/admins discussed Meme pages and agreed they prefer them to stay."

So the slurs get to stay too! Apparently keeping all the meme pages means we also have to keep the slurs! We must preserve the important classic FFXI culture of, checks notes:

2017. This page was created in twenty *** SEVENTEEN. The same classic FFXI culture of the year where Omen was the hot new endgame content.

edit: Oh. My bad. The "Mentally Deficient" page is obviously not from 2017.

As I posted over there on the Suggestions page, I will not be editing the BG Wiki any further until, at minimum, those two slurs are removed - plus any others I don't know about, I'm not going to say there aren't more.

"BG mods/admins": What exactly are you thinking? You clearly discussed this, so by all means, please do air out the results of your discussion publicly.

Honestly, it feels absolutely crazy for the admins to act like the painfully unfunny meme pages are somehow load-bearing and in need of protection. Thought the wiki was meant to be an informative resource for the game. dumb as hell

What does keeping a slur tell us, other than that the admins were - oops, still are! same admins! - slur-users in 2017 and 2023?

Like, this is the argument in favor of keeping Confederate statues. Trust me, I ain't gonna forget the general tone of the ***people said in 2006 with or without some "object lessons" from 2017 or 2023.

bg forums were actually one of the first places I remember people getting mad at stuff like this, isladar went nuclear over it and was never quite the same after. anyone remember the "you are a gigantic f" pic for anyone who got banned? bg's change in moderation was one of the earliest instances of woke that I remember.

it's just words, and trying to make everywhere a safe space is dumb. you can't convince anyone actually offended by this stuff to see a different viewpoint, though, so don't bother.

No they didn't, a small number of people are sensitive and they complain and since complaining often works a tiny minority of people get to impose their values on everyone else.

The admins clearly agree they are problematic or they wouldn't have protected them. It's extremely embarrassing.

The pages should absolutely be removed. Claiming they are part of the games history is laughable given their age, and I don't think a history of when slurs were considered cool is worth enshrining on a game wiki.

Oh, absolutely. If they'd just let those two go I wouldn't care even slightly about keeping the rest of the "Meme" category. But now I'm being loud and we're finding out exactly how many people are hellbent on "it's just words".

r*tard isn't a slur. It's a medical term that was coopted and used hyperbolically because it turns out, people of medium intelligence really don't like dealing with people of low intelligence. Same goes for mentally deficient. Legitimate term used hyperbolically(honestly, probably not even hyperbolic in all cases).

Every time you cancel a term that indicates someone is less intelligent than the average, a new one has to be made. It's a necessary concept.

I didn't realize the filter had finally been lifted and wanted to convey the word I was referring to rather than confusing the reader.
