You mean the horizontal? It largely died for a time when item level was introduced in the first place.

But Defending Ring hasn't been replaced. It just isn't as pivotal as it once was. Heck, you probably can combine it with Murky for a DT set that sacrifices less main slots to DT for a dedicated DT set.

On the other side, I think it is the best alternative replacing it instead of revamping it.

Because you end restricting one slot for an all time BiS, what is not the core game philosophy.

Also, you end up making the upgrade process convoluted overtime. Just think the amount of effort required to bring the REM to the last stage. All those steps are purely time/resources sink without a single hint of lore behind it. It is just a convoluted mess people swallow just to make an old toy still relevant (and sometimes, not even that).

So yeah, I think is a bad and risky strategy investing in an old item just for fan service. It is way easier just making a better item drop from a regular mob instead.

You're right, there are 2 ring slots but not sure what else to replace with murky ring. In PDT sets ring slots are usually defending + gelatinous ring and since you can reach MDT cap pretty easy with shellV and gelatinous also adding other stuff like HP defending ring seems to be the logical choice.

TBH the upgrade process of those items doesn't look like it's much less of a hustle than a REMA upgrade.
