I am a HUGE P. K. *** fan.
*Shake hands* :DDDD oh hey, an actual person who belongs to the same world as me!!!!!
:DDDD Chatty <333333
I love PKD too. His works and philosophy really inspired me in many ways. That's why Blade runner has such a special place in my heart.
Imo PKD's core theme is really all about social commentary. He challenged the power structure of the society and the reality/identity brought by technology. As well as man-made entity's role within the human society.
IMO some parts of both movie explored this core theme quite well. In the 1982 film it explored replicant, man-made memory and their role in human society. In 2049 it explored AI and their behavior, as well as their relationship with the user.
If you look at how AI behave today, it's shockingly similar to how AI(Joi) behave in BR 2049. They all seemingly say things that the user wants to hear, but downright misleading, while looking and sounding like a human. In other words, a fake reality created by technology.
I use ChatGPT today, and I was so shocked that all those were predicted in BR 2049 few years before ChatGPT. And I would say BR 2049 is also very "PKD style" because of this.
This kind of social commentary about the technology, IMO, is what the core theme really is.
I think it's kinda unfortunate that the 2 movies ended up attracting tons of people who is only here for sci-fi, neon-lights, gun actions and hot girl/guys but completely ignored PKD's original social commentary being the core theme. I think that's why some people prefer book.
For me personally, in a Blade runner sequel you either successfully insert such social commentary or fail. Everything else don't matter nearly as much.
