So I'm a research assistant for the social psychology department at my university and my lab manager is pretty weird. I mean he just acts strange sometimes and he looks goofy, I know mean... But yeah. Anyways so he approaches me one day and asks if I want to be friends because he's only been in the state a little while and he has a hard time making friends because of his peculiar personality. At first I just played it off, said I don't care to be friends outside of this work environment.
That was like 5 months ago and I am starting to feel bad because the poor guy obviously just has anxiety problems and a weird personality but he seems nice. I dont mind Having to Be around him for the short period of time being in the department rooms. but he just kinda says off the wall things sometimes. I'm just not interested in his company... But I agreed to "hang out" with him and another woman from the lab sometime.
Why can't I just be a *** and avoid uncomfortable circumstances. I'm friends with the woman so it shouldn't be too bad but damn my sympathy. Ironyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Yesterday was a rather interesting day for me. I'm just chilling out on campus, minding my own business, and studying for a midterm exam I had to do. This random guy sat nearby and he asked "Hey, how are you doing?", "Fine, just studying for an exam I got to do in an hour" I said. We made small talk, discuss college life, asked me if I lived here or commute, talked about my major and what I do. He seemed very friendly, but there was something suspicious about him. Eventually, he asked "I know this is going to sound very random and I don't mean to catch you off guard, but are you in to the bible?". I said "No, I don't read the bible". "Do you consider yourself a christian?" he asked. I simply said no. The most awkward silence I've ever experienced happen for five seconds. "Oh... okay... that's cool then. There's a bible discussion that will happen later tonight on campus. You're more than welcome to join and learn more about the bible, it's free so you don't have to pay anything" he said. I just simply said okay and got back to studying.
I'm not really angry or upset about him asking me about my religious beliefs, but what was really revealing about him was he totally ignored me from there on out. I'm more amused to see him react that way and completely leaving me a lone. I haven't had to worry about a lot of these situations like this, so I don't really know how a usual christian would act towards other people. I would expect a bit of humility, but there was something strange about him that didn't seem right. His friendly and happy demeanor just seemed unnatural and contrived. He gave of a subtle, condescending vibe, but masked with good intentions supposedly. I dunno, I have mixed feelings about my encounter yesterday. I'm not surprised how he was towards the end. I'm pretty sure I handled that situation with class and I'm glad I kept true to my beliefs even if they're inconvenient to others.
He had a wicked awesome beard though, lol I'd say you handled it nicely. You probably got his personality down right. There are all kinds of religious types, he seems like one with an agenda. You didn't meet his standards so he moved on. The best are the extremely happy kind! They'll stick around and talk to you even after you tell them no thanks. They're so perky, you'll either want to jab your eyes out or can't help but laugh.
But hey, should have offered a high five for the beard!

The fact that the guy felt the need to ask you to be friends probably says a lot about how difficult of a time he has with social issues. Most people stop asking people to be their friends in elementary school.
I don't know what sort of advice to give you, though. I don't have people asking me to be their friend, and when I try to be nice to someone and it doesn't work out, I just go about my business without them.

I usually end up going for the artistic types.
Actually, only two girls I've dated haven't fit that to some degree. And one of them was still musically talented. Not the same type of art, but still something.
