I get those rouge security software viruses at least once a month from FFXIclopedia (its always from the ads, not the site itself). Last time I got one it killed my antivirus and broke all my programs so that every time I tried to open one it would ask me what program I wanted to open it with.
Does that stop me from using FFXIclopedia? Not yet!

or you could use safer features. anti virus, firefox(no script, ad block plus)
using ad aware and a decent anti virus programs should keep your pc safe.

< Webroot Antivirus with Antispyware + Firefox = still happens. Seems these days quite a few malware and rouge viruses can disable antiviruses. Webroot still caught it but couldn't keep it from messing up some of my reg files first. All I can say is keep your system restore points updated and hope the virus doesn't delete em.

Yeah, NoScript & AdBlockPlus will definitely nip alot of internet threats in the bud. For anything else that gets by, I would strongly recommend Avast antivirus and Malwarebytes for anti spy/adware.

Firefox is even less secure than internet explorer now without noscript as a minimum.
Additionally, system restore does not fix viruses.

Cept ActiveX loopholes are found on a regular basis with IE.

I don't use IE - just stating a fact that Firefox without the addons is not secure. I've been using firefox since long before it was called firefox or was even popular.

The best protection against most online threats is common sense.
Aside from that you should have basic protection like NoScript, an antivirus, anti spy/adware software on the side in case something gets past your judgment.

I second that - however, the same applies to using internet explorer. Common sense. Only bringing that up since you wanted to question my point about how secure firefox is without noscript etc. compared to IE.
IE does not run activex controls on the default settings now. Only a person with no common sense would have turned them on by default. It also has many more security features than it once did because microsoft were forced to step up their game after the rise of firefox.
Just a reminder - I don't use IE. Just trying to be impartial here.

Get a Mac and you're guaranteed not to get any viruses ;o
because 99% of viruses out there are targeted to windows users :D

That is a fact, which goes in line with the logic that hackers/people who expose security threats, generally target software that is more popular.
That's why when firefox first became mega popular, it was on the front of most PC magazines with hundreds of security threats having been exposed.
Mac OS just aren't used as widely as windows for these things to happen. Or we can start a fanboy argument about how Mac OS are just better... <--- Not my opinion.

Man I can't help but cringe when I read subject titles with such horrible typos. Sorry.
On topic:
Avast free edition
Spybot Search & Destroy
Ad-Block
NoScript
Haven't seen a virus in 5 years or so, a few false positives, but nothing else. Of course most of the people that have been on my PC have been supervised by myself or are computer builders themselves.
Good luck OP.

Was about to offer the same advice, these will keep you clean and should help clean up what has happened
Plus they are all free.
No need to pay for anything

Izey...I use these on My pc in conjuction with each other. I clear my pc right after im done doing everything...
While my browser is Firefox, I utilize..
Programs I use:
Cleanup! http://www.stevengould.org/index.php?Itemid=69&id=15&option=com_content&task=view
CCleaner! http://www.ccleaner.com/
ATF- Cleaner! http://www.atribune.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25&Itemid=25
and finally, last but not least...
Spyboy Search and Destory! http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html
and if you have a good Antivirus use that, and make sure its on a all times!
these are cleaning programs that are free. Before I use these programs, I always read stuff b4 Downloading, and I had used these for 5 years straight since I got my CPU and always religiously used these..
and always use good surfing habits. Not talking down to ya, just letting you know what I use. I feel for ya! I know. I had a few issues that I just plainly used my back ups and rewiped my CPU and did a factory re-Install...
Hoped it help!

TO OP:
If you're Using Windows, just do a simple roll back to the whole pc, roll back to a earlier date. This always worked for me on Windows XP & Vista.
Aside from that, everyone else pretty much suggested the best free stuff there is. Also Super Anti Spywere works too!
If you really want to avoid this again, Don't let your roommate use the admin desktop. Save the admin account for setting setting admin settings for oher desktops. In short, like for example:
I have java disabled, i run No Script with no sites on the exceptions list, McAfee Site Adviser and their 'safe search' (i know lolyahoo) and so on. Anyway the idea is, that i have all my secuirty in place thus making the other desktops for other ppl to use in my house safer to use. can't download anything and disabled saving anything to temp internet files.
SO in general what happens is, if a desktop should happen to get infected, just back up anything important off of it, delete it and recreate it. In the long run this will save you a lot of headache or it has for me anyway.

One important program not mentioned.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Download it and run it.
And run spybot search and destroy mentioned before.
Normally solves most problems for me.
If not solved you can try this out.

With the right safety measures in place and locked down, anyone can use your computer without *** it up. These days, people who put viruses on other peoples' computers do this intentionally, since no one is that brain dead to not know about the growing amount of internet viruses/bots/worms/whatever creeping around the web.
Point is, beef up your security, update your anti virus, and block certain URLs from being accessed.
