Surely there's a ton of people who have those emotes that bother the ***out of you? Just had a conversation with a friend about this and it seemed like perfect forum material! I think my biggest are *.*, ^_^, and =] - they mostly just bother me because of the people I knew who used them way too often which eventually led to the creation of this thread.
Also the "subtle hitting on you" ;) and the way people will say really passive-aggressive things and throw smilies at the end. Pyopee on Seraph did that ***constantly and it drove me crazy! (also caused a slight hate for all mithra, but that's a totally different thread!)

Some people can be real sweethearts, others are just frickin' annoying. <_< >_> -- shifty eyes make me wanna punch you. :O - you'll get flies! n_n - Every time I see this, I think the person is annoyed, not happy. I barely use smileys, so when I use them it usually means I'm really happy lol.

/feeds you to Chelonian. It is hard to express yourself online, though text. There is no tone to go off by, so sometimes it is harder to get your sarcastic, or angry feelings across. That is what emoticons are used for. Imagine being expressionless IRL, think about how dull it would be.
If you don't like emoticons, then gtfo the internet, because you cannot escape from them, simple as that.
