Gay Fascism on HGTV
By Jetackuu 2014-05-10 18:12:26
I remember someone who posted here a while ago who said something along the lines of being gay in a sin, but only god can forgive them, so they love gay people, even though it's a sin.
What's that considered? Crazy.

They did get fired for their personal pro-christian beliefs. Where did these brothers say "I hate teh gayz, Jews, and Muslims. Oh and women." SOME people can't understand that when someone else has beliefs that offend you it doesn't make them offensive even if it is ignorant.
let me refer you back to my post on the last page:
'As leader of OSA, Benham has condemned the interfaith Sandy Hook memorial, protested in front of mosques while shouting “Jesus Hates Muslims” and blamed the Aurora shooting on the Democratic Party, which he said promotes a “culture of death.”
He has also protested LGBT pride events, interrupted church services during a sermon by “sodomite Episcopalian bishop” Gene Robinson and was found “guilty of stalking a Charlotte abortion doctor after passing out hundreds of ‘wanted’ posters with the physician's name and photo on it.” OSA* even blamed the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on abortion rights'
bolding mine for emphasis
yup, totally not related to any actions, all because they say they're Christian.
their show was canceled before it was made because of this stuff. HGTV was informed of these things and had second thoughts about putting them on the air for fear of controversy/protest.
So his only actual "crime" was passing out "wanted posters" with an abortion doctors name on them ...
HGTV had the responsibility of vetting their prospective employees better. If the brothers did not lie on their "application" then they did nothing wrong with regards to their employment.
Consider this, during the gay/civil rights movements activists did far worse than passing out pieces of paper in protest of abortions. I'm glad they did as without them doing so we would not be where we are today. BTW I support a woman's right to choose under certain circumstances but I do not support its use as birth control. My aunt had 5 abortions out of laziness.
I'm a little in between on this because I feel people have the right to employment based on ability and performance. I dislike that expressing/promoting your views and opinions outside of work should effect your employment. I do not support their views but I support their right to have them, without fear of being fired, so long as they do not express them at work.

Hate the sin, not the sinner kind of mentality.
it comes off as mildly offensive to some, but isn't intended to be, and they could still happy for them.
I would consider it... odd, but somewhat reasonable.

Unfortunately, there have been court cases that sided with faith healing, that ultimately ended with the victims suffering horrible pain until they died. Isn't that kinda like a sacrifice?

There is more than one crime being committed. I would bold the parts already bolded, but I couldn't make the text big enough for you to see the active promotion of hate speech against another religion, the criminal activity of harassment and stalking, etc.

I'm sorry I only see one CRIME "found guilty of stalking". I see a lot of really dumb stuff said but only one crime...

Aside from being a dickbag, poster above me pretty much nailed it, that's the only illegal thing he did, all the others are just *** moves, not crimes.

Hate speech is protected in the eyes of the law, to a certain extent. Recent example, Westboro Baptist Church, KKK parades, etc etc. It crosses the line into the illegal category when it is intentially used to incite and provoke violence. The KKK can scream and march in a parade how blacks and gays are ruining the country and are evil and be protected. However, if they say "blacks and gays are evil and ruining the country, lets kill them all", that is not protected.
By fillerbunny9 2014-05-10 19:36:32
so HGTV decided they didn't want a dickbag to be one of the faces of their network. when you are working in the public eye, that's perfectly viable. Paula Deen did some dickbag moves but nothing exactly illegal. why isn't everyone lamenting her career and defending her use of racial slurs? same goes for Donald Sterling. if Benham is not culpable then neither are these other "victims" and we should all be demanding their reinstatement immediately!

Not sure which is more grating: anti-gay privilege itself or the incessant whining of its death knell.

Sterling is only out because of the bylaws and the contracts he signed and agreed to abide by. He still owns the team, he is just banned from attending events. They are trying to force him to sell and will probably find a billionaire with enough money to overpay for the team, so that he will do so, because otherwise it could take years before any progress is made in this effort.
My only issue with this is Benham did not make his comments while on a HGTV broadcast or while representing HGTV in any way. They were made in his personal life. I can separate the two. I would likely imagine many people are glad that their every thought/action is not reported to their employer. I think that he had the right to maintain his show so long as he provided the quality of product expected. Viewership would have then had their chance to express their support/condemnation through ratings. If his ratings were low HGTV would then have been in the right to cancel the show. I would not have watched.

They may not be able to force him to sell. I was watching a report today that said his wife/ex-wife is the co-owner, and has 50%, so they'd have to force her to sell as well, which she is saying she is going to fight.

Donald Sterling will be forced to sell the team and it will be sold before next year. His wife Shelly wants to keep her stake, I think she will be able to, however, the title of controlling partner (Donald's old position) has to be approved by the remaining 29 owners, and Shelly has no chance of getting that. Honestly they will prolly tell her to retire (with her stake) and go lay on a beach.

Really? I'm gay and you are? Please enlighten me how you are less ignorant in gay topics than a gay man. I'm also older than most of the gays in this forum.
Sorry but this is when I bust out the Whoopi Goldberg The View black card. You also have some ***-backwards views by feeding into the same *** used against gay people when you attack other minorities like your infamous transgender topic which was deleted (at your request, I'm guessing).
Ono and I are different. Both gay, but completely different. You are a truck of cow ***away from my view point. Don't pretend as if you're some *** spokesperson when your views are so conflicting that you seem as if you're a straight republican.
Maybe you're older (I don't know, nor care) but you are *** ridiculous.

It means that while you as an individual may not feel a type of way, you should be aware that your religion systematically devalues human beings for their sexuality, understand that people are going to be upset with a structure that dehumanizes them, and recognize that if you subscribe to that belief system without actively addressing the issues in it, you are silently part of the system that perpetuates the problem.

I'm still trying to figure out how this is fascism or a violation of anyone's rights. One private entity decided it no longer wanted to do business with another private entity because the the latter's views and actions are incongruous with the views and goals of the former.
This action was not dictated by the government. There was pressure from outside entities, but HGTV at no point was forced to make the decision that they did. They came to the conclusion that they preferred the consequences of cutting ties to the two than maintaining a business relationship with them.
How else is it supposed to be done? The alternative would be to force people and businesses to associate with those who will do them social and financial harm, and that would be a violation of rights.
Now can freedom of association be abused and misused like many other rights can? Of course. It has been and will continue to be until humans evolve into something better. Should it be cast aside because of that? Well before you answer, imagine that same standard applied to all the other rights and then get back to me.

Quote: HGTV is popular with the gays, so more than a few were scratching their heads when the cable channel announced a pilot featuring two brothers, one of whom—David Benham—has distinctly anti-gay views, as Right Wing Watch reported:
Later, Benham told Mefferd that America’s Christian majority must repent for tolerating abortion rights, no-fault divorce, legal pornography, “homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation” and the “demonic ideologies” that he says have taken over the education system.
After a backlash on the brothers' Facebook page, HGTV cancelled Flip It Forward, which prompted its own backlash with Fox star Megyn Kelly agreeing with Family Research Counil head Tony Perkins that unlike gay people (!), the rights of Christians aren't as "protected and recognized in this country.” On Thursday, CNN’s Reliable Sources host Brian Stelter suggested this could be a thing and that Americans might perceive HGTV’s decision as a sign of intolerance toward intolerance.
“There is a risk, though, I think, of matching perceived intolerance with more intolerance,” Stelter said. “If you are someone at home who’s looking at this thinking, why are they taking away these brothers' TV show simply because of what they believe in the personal life, the answer—part of the answer to that—is diversity in the media.”
Luckily, NPR media critic Eric Deggans jumped in before the nodding CNN host closed out the segment. He disagreed with Stelter, saying that if the prospective hosts had expressed the same views about African-Americans instead of gays they wouldn’t even be having the discussion, nor would the brothers be able to find another network employer.
- See more at: http://www.frontiersla.com/frontiers-blog/2014/05/09/cnn-media-host-thinks-hgtv-scrapping-anti-gays-risks-matching-intolerance-with-more-intolerance#sthash.ekFzQwFR.dpuf
People should be entitled to their views, regardless of how ignorant they may be. It is when they take action in which it physically harms someone or inhibits their civil liberties that there should be consequences. This is very far from the actions of WBC. I would have liked to see such media coverage of WBC from LGBT non-profs and media outlets...just saying. People need to remember freedom of speech is a two way street, and if you are unwilling to protect that liberty for the ignorant and bigoted then freedom of speech as a concept is nothing but a sham.
