Quote: HGTV is popular with the gays, so more than a few were scratching their heads when the cable channel announced a pilot featuring two brothers, one of whom—David Benham—has distinctly anti-gay views, as Right Wing Watch reported:
Later, Benham told Mefferd that America’s Christian majority must repent for tolerating abortion rights, no-fault divorce, legal pornography, “homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation” and the “demonic ideologies” that he says have taken over the education system.
After a backlash on the brothers' Facebook page, HGTV cancelled Flip It Forward, which prompted its own backlash with Fox star Megyn Kelly agreeing with Family Research Counil head Tony Perkins that unlike gay people (!), the rights of Christians aren't as "protected and recognized in this country.” On Thursday, CNN’s Reliable Sources host Brian Stelter suggested this could be a thing and that Americans might perceive HGTV’s decision as a sign of intolerance toward intolerance.
“There is a risk, though, I think, of matching perceived intolerance with more intolerance,” Stelter said. “If you are someone at home who’s looking at this thinking, why are they taking away these brothers' TV show simply because of what they believe in the personal life, the answer—part of the answer to that—is diversity in the media.”
Luckily, NPR media critic Eric Deggans jumped in before the nodding CNN host closed out the segment. He disagreed with Stelter, saying that if the prospective hosts had expressed the same views about African-Americans instead of gays they wouldn’t even be having the discussion, nor would the brothers be able to find another network employer.

People should be entitled to their views, regardless of how ignorant they may be. It is when they take action in which it physically harms someone or inhibits their civil liberties that there should be consequences. This is very far from the actions of WBC. I would have liked to see such media coverage of WBC from LGBT non-profs and media outlets...just saying. People need to remember freedom of speech is a two way street, and if you are unwilling to protect that liberty for the ignorant and bigoted then freedom of speech as a concept is nothing but a sham.

People are entitled to their views, and when they're bigoted and hateful, regardless of them trying to hide behind their religion if they make those views public, the public will react.

Are we really allowing the public to react? Or simply censoring the public from certain views at this point. It's not like they were going to be advocating their views on the program.
Quote: "Next on the Home Gardening Network we are going to show you how to plant some lovely tulips all while prohibiting gays from marriage equality!"
I think if you are like Paula Dean and separating your views from the program you should be able to have a show.

HGTV is a business and they're going to do anything to protect their profits. They won't risk a boycott by alienating one of their biggest (extremely outspoken and easily offended) viewerships. Yes, this guy has freedom of speech like any other American, but that freedom doesn't guarantee you the right to a TV show, especially when it goes against the values of the company that owns that TV show. Neither side did anything wrong here. They just didn't fit on this particular channel. Their rights weren't infringed upon, so this shouldn't even be an issue.

People seem to think freedom of speech means you can say whatever you want without consequences.. Just like with Donald Sterling, you are free to say whatever you want, and everyone else is free to respond however they wish, within reason.
By Jetackuu 2014-05-09 21:36:47
Personally? I don't really give a ***as they are being intolerant bigots, and currently, not like it's ancient history.
Not like I really watch hgtv anyway, I have seen some of their stuff, and I do enjoy some of it.

Quote: People need to remember freedom of speech
Freedom of speech is only relevant between the person who is saying what they're saying and the government (and their inability to punish you for hating [insert group here])
A private broadcasting channel is not the government. While the ppl who made that show have every right to say what they do and believe what they do, the tv station also has a right to decide what airs on their networks

Freedom of Speech was something basically made to be so you could speak out about the government/establishment and not be prosecuted/imprisoned. Notice how if you say, speak out about Putin in Russia, you'll get the crap beaten out of you and thrown into a Gulag. in America worst case, people will just roll their eyes at you.
Freedom of speech isn't so you can be a hateful ignorant jagoff without consequence.

The only people at fault here are the dipshits who thought this was news. Bonus Points for being on TV and not understanding Rule 1 Of TV sponsorship: Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

They've also rallied against abortion and Muslims so we shouldn't overlook the potential involvement of those respective fascists as well.

They aren't victims and they don't deserve sympathy, they are entitled to their opinions, but they are not entitled to a tv show. Good for HGTV. Next time pay attention in sensitivity training.

I'm still trying to figure out what this had to do with fascism, or why one things hate speech should be protected.

How about some electro-beer therapy?
By fillerbunny9 2014-05-09 23:37:17
Those darn gays at it again! Always pretending to be oppressed and instead hurting good God fearing citizens who'd never do this to them! Oh wait.
http://m.christianpost.com/news/nfl-team-that-drafts-openly-gay-player-michael-sam-will-face-boycott-says-d-c-lobbyist-seeking-to-ban-gays-from-league--119382/
'Jack Burkman, head of the Washington, D.C. lobbying firm J.M. Burkman & Assoc. who is seeking to ban gays from the NFL, says he intends to build a national coalition to boycott any football franchise that picks openly gay football player Michael Sam in the NFL Draft, which starts Thursday at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
"The NFL, like most of the rest of American business, is about to learn that when you trample the Christian community and Christian values there will be a terrible financial price to pay," said Burkman.'
Remember, everytime the gays boycott something it's just them oppressing good Christian folk. Everytime you protest the gays it's an exercise of the free market for righteous reasons!

Actually that is what it is. And as a gay man myself I can see how gays are going overboard. Gays today particularly the younger ones need to take Xanax and chill the *** out with protesting everything. Not everyone is out to get them.
There are much bigger concerns in the LGBT community than ***like boycotting CEO's and television programs. Ironically, most of those bigger problems are within the LGBT community itself.

So you're not going to address the blatant hypocrisy that gays are totes valid as a target but "conservative values" need to be protected like special little snowflakes who are perpetually oppressed because Jesus? Also, from what I have read not a single gay group said diddly until AFTER HGTV let their position be known. Right wing watch, who tattled to HGTV is just a liberal news site.
I guess we'll also disregard their various other positions that led to this (against no fault divorce, abortion, and anti-Muslim sentiments) because again, it's only about the gay mafia fascists.

Lawwwwwl. The NFL is a 10 billion dollar brand, good luck with that Mr. Lobbyist. If Michael Sam doesn't get drafted, its going to be because of his lack of football talent. However, I think he will get drafted, and the team that drafts him has literally nothing to worry about, especially if its a big name like Dallas, Green Bay, Seattle, heck, even the Cleveland Browns. There is nothing that can slow down the NFL, Americans love their football. Can't wait to see this "boycott" tho, for the laughs.
