Probably FFXI uses this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numerology to decide the luck of your character through it's life.

Pick a "bad" name and your fate is sealed in drops, in synthesis and in fishing. lol

Anything with a "luck" factor in it will suck for you.

This is just a hypothesis though. Don't take it seriously.
