In my 2nd week in FF, I had a Ninja tanking a party in the Jungles who was going afk after every 2nd fight to spew, lol.
That being said though, Alcohol and Exp go hand in hand. I attribute 2/3rd of my total exp and 100% of my merits to alcohol XD. Besides, you can make fun drinking games in FF with drinking. The Drunken Skillup game; anytime someone gets a whole 1.0 lvl everyone /random. Highest has to drink, if its 900+ then that person gets to designate someone who drinks, and if someone rolls 0 or 111 222 333 etc, everyone drinks. And for Beastmasters, merit in Bibiki Bay. If your pet Bunny uses Wild Carrot, you drink! Well I only do it when I've had a few then get back home and I'm wide awake. Out of habbit I log onto to FFXI because on most nights that's what I do anyway~ I don't tend to tell people I'm drunk but my shell notices due to my enthusiastic approach to typing. Some people say it to warn people they may be a bit brash, and others do it just because they think it's cool. The silly buggers.

Meh I used to get drunk and thought it was cool, but then I turned 15 years old and realized it really isn't cool. Most people drink because no matter how shy or ugly we are, it makes us FEEL cool. :P Everyone is more confident when they're drunk, that's why everyone drinks when they're at parties.
