Everything I've read basically says that I would have to level the WHM equivalent (forgot what that was called) along with ARC and BRD? So...Is this set up similar to Rift then? Is there absolutely no way to do another combo that could be effective, even if it's just for fun?

It's like FF tactics you need 1 job to 30 1 job to 15 (varies on advanced job) to unluck those advanced jobs.

Wish I had a way to help you on that one. I'd say the advanced jobs seem like a large improvement to their individual classes as a whole, not sure if any other "combos" would work better or are even viable anymore since I don't look much into the game besides major update announcements.
I wonder, has SE said anything about making more of these advanced classes?

Bard is the only advanced job for Archer at the moment, yeah.
But you don't have to use the advanced jobs.
The way SE explained it a while back was that the base classes are meant for solo play; allowing you to use any ability from any other class, assuming you have enough points left and the correct level.
While the "advanced jobs" are more specialised forms of the base classes, with more limited abilities to choose from (but gaining unique abilities), intended for use in party play where there are other people to cover your weaknesses.
But that's all just what I've read; I haven't had a chance to try the advanced jobs myself because the job quests can't be soloed when you first gain access and there's nobody on Sargatanas with me. ._.;

Yup. Crafting is also a lot more involving than in XI, though, so it actually feels like a real class too. They even have their own traits and abilities. :O

Well last time I logged on (maybe a month or two ago), we had 200 inventory space, which is sexy and all, but we were lacking any storage space, which kinda sucked. ^^;
