Silent Hill hasn't been particularly scary since SH4 tbh. Nothing besides jump scares, anyway.

RE wasn't particularly scary more just creepy and startling at times. The combat so far seems really... useless. I watch a video of a guy running around enemies and destroying them with the wooden plank but can't seem to do it myself. Just end up getting nearly killed in the process.
I'm not sure if that exists in any version but the PS2 one. Not really necessary though. Melee weapons stun lock every enemy, bar bosses for most of the game.
Combat really isn't the focus of the early Silent Hill games though. But it looks so fun!
Plus some of the cheevos require killing x number of enemies with melee attacks etc :< did someone say Cheetos?

It is the weakest weapon in the game; its reach is limited and it only causes a small amount of damage against monsters; however, it is a quick weapon and can be relied upon to dispatch most monsters until James finds the Pipe. It is the only one-handed weapon in the game and as such, James can swing it much faster than any other melee weapon in the game. Some have speculated that James' one handed wielding is a glitch; however, it is more likely that it was intended by game developers. While wielding it and using auto target (PC), James will enter a wild swinging frenzy that dispatches most foes with ease. It is this characteristic that makes the Wooden Plank one of the most useful weapons, despite its low damage. That'd explain why I never managed it in any of my runs.

Big part of the reason Silent Hill 2 is scary for me so far: I suck at these games.
I always try to kill everything, I've been too spoiled by the "Hide behind a chest high wall and suck your thumb until your health comes back" gameplay of the last few years. I am horrible at managing my health items, and half the time die without realizing I had taken much damage. To top it off the only time I ever find a save spot is when I am red health and have no items left -_- |
