I 100% agree with that post.

I think another issue stems from the longevity of a lot of the media as well. You don't need to properly establish your universe if the rules you give it apply well enough to the bubble of your story. But if you expand that universe it gets increasingly more abstract as you glue more rules onto the outside until it loses all familiarity.

Look at D&D. Its rules work extremely well for things like medieval combat and basic roleplaying. But it quickly falls apart because its rules are too focused. Good luck using its system to run a game even as far advanced as Renaissance era. I counted once and there's a list of like 19 "if, then" rules to describe what happens when a character is KO'ed. And it still doesn't even cover some things. like your character can still technically dodge someone thrusting a sword into your unconscious body. So half the time you're homebrewing your own rules anyway.

The universe designed to accommodate infinite stories only got a few, while the universes designed to accommodate one story get twisted and warped beyond recognition with every new iteration lol

The original Star Trek was visionary for its time, but in a social sense, not a sci-fi sense.

Single best example: the first interracial TV kiss was on Star Trek.

Most magic systems have basic rules. A few:

The law of similarity: similar things interact.

The law of contagion: things once in contact continue to interact.

Voodoo dolls use both of these.

The law of proportional sacrifice: greater effects require greater sacrifice.

The Buffyverse runs on this one.

The other thing about Star Trek is that there was more “rules” about the story fleshed out by the original creator than Star Wars. George Lucas was directly involved with 6 movies and indirectly involved in hundreds of books before Disney came along and destroyed the universe, while Roddenberry was directly involved with hundreds of shows of the Star Trek universe and indirectly involved with hundreds of books until he died.

So, there was more consistency between Star Trek than Star Wars would ever hope to achieve.

An engineer told me once that it's sort of an engineering mindset to favor description over prescription.

My ultimate goal in writing my own tabletop RPG ruleset has been to make the whole thing run with as few rules as possible by dismantling common RPG "if, then" rules and aggregating them into math.

I’m a big fan of voyager as well and the faux science motivated a lot of theorizing in my youth

Really felt bad for Jeri Ryan though, could barely breathe in her costume originally and received a lot of animosity for joining the show and the direction it took.

The last couple of seasons of voyager were pretty weak, and the finale was meh. It wasn't as bad as DS9s finale but neither show ended well. Overall I thought DS9 had the better cast and was a better show for it.

I personally liked DS9 the most of all the Star Trek series I've watched. The second half of Voyager was getting decent and could have benefited from having one more season attached to it. The ending was far too abrupt and sudden. The ending should've essentially been a build up that is half a season long given the context of the series.

Funny enough, if you want to watch a modern day Star Trek, The Orville is a pretty good watch. It takes a lot of nods that made TNG shine and added their own modern day touch. And yes, there is humour since it's a Seth MacFarlane project, but it isn't quite as crazy as I thought it would be. Overall, I do highly recommend watching it if you are a Star Trek fan.

Rogue One was a great movie, despite the heavy editing. I'm looking forward to the spinoff tv show.

I can’t argue with this.

The warp 10 episode could have so easily been written superbly instead of being called the worst episode.

A bit of dialogue like, “humans normally evolve over hundreds of generations of high activity, but his accelerated rate is being dictated by the fact that he’s being so sedentary. If mr Paris can sit in sick bay and survive the equivalent of thousands of generations of time, his normal evolutionary path is going to deem most muscular and brain function unnecessary for survival; He’s likely going to end up as a species with no locomotion or mobility at all at this rate since as a species, they are no longer traits he needs to survive.”

Which would be interesting at hell, evolutionary manipulation theory go

I like Futurama's take on evolution.

Bender: "Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wouldn't it take millions of years to evolve into mermaids?"
Umbriel: "Normally, yes, but the caffeine really sped things up. That stuff's wonderful."

So I've googled this and can't get a 2021 answer.

Gfycat is like permanently 403 blocked. Anyone have that/know why?

It's not any adblockers, it's not browser specific, I think our isp literally blocked it? I read that they had previously blocked all access to imgur. That's a weird thing to do.

If this is the same thing ....

The original rainbow cat .gif was sold as an NFT.

But this shouldn't block reproductions on the web.

Naw, it's gfycat.com, place where the memes come from.

It's been broken (403'd) for like a year, just didn't care much but now I'm really curious.
