Try Firefox until the next chrome update?
After some research on my phone's browser (lol...) it appears the problem has been around for a couple of years now according to some forums posts on the Google Support Forum.
Just installed Firefox. So far no issues, and I even got to import my bookmarks and whatnot.
I would uninstall chrome, preferably with something more than just built in uninstaller to remove traces of chrome. Then restart, and install the newest update. Once you log into your chrome account your bookmarks, history, tabs, etc, will be uploaded to your computer (best part about chrome imo).
I do a browser "refresh" every few months. Updates don't erase the previous version, just builds on top of it I'm guessing, so that old leftover code slows a browser down overtime, any browser.
