Will the console boot up? The only thing I can think of is starting the system up and go like you are starting a game. Usually it's the 'triangle' button to open tray. Besides that, if you are trying to retrieve a stuck game, you may have to check if you can remove the face on the dvd tray and might find a manual release button (usually the size of a pin hole) or maybe the butter knife trick (but that I only know for sure to work with a PS2). If your failbox is failing to open the tray, it's because you left the tray closed for a long while without "exercising" it. (I'm actually half serious about this) There's a rubber band there which drives a pair of pulleys and that's what transfer the mechanical power from the tray motor to the tray gears. The rubber get oval and it stops transferring the rotation from the motor pulley to the bigger gear pulley (it spins loose). Here's a pic of the phenomena at instructables: http://www.instructables.com/id/Disassembling-a-CDDVD-reader-and-reusing-its-parts/step7/The-tray-mechanism/ Replacing the rubber ring and making sure the tray is properly cleaned and lubricated (with plastic compatible lube) will fix the issue completely.
