In the ratio of light speed and time we measure threw the sun and moon, the visible Universe is 14 million years old which translates to 14,000,000/1,000 = 14,000 years old.
Yam sayin?
The visible universe is roughly 13.7 billion years old according to Steven Hawking, who also estimates that it has about another 14 billion left. Our galaxy is near the edge, so older than most. I believe last estimated our rock was like just shy of 3/4 of a billion, but would need to look it up.

Are you talking about earth? Our planet is appx. 4 Billion years old. And life started appx. 3 billion years ago too just for fun info.

Where are you getting these numbers from? Are you just making them up?

Light years are distance not time

Lots of time spent watching How the Universe Works. Also anything with Neil Tyson Degrasse or Michio Kaku.
From my understanding, they get these numbers by calculating the movement of galaxies only in reverse back as far as possible.

I meant eslim, and wouldn't light years double as a measure of time? I mean, you have the speed and distance, so you could get time out of it anyway.

You could calculate time but no it doesn't double as time since it is a measurement of length based on the speed of light in a vacuum. The only way it technically doubles as time is when determining how long it would take a source of light to travel from one place to another.
Also keep in mind that even in that case 1 lightyear would be slightly different from a normal year since they use a different type of year (the Julian year) to calculate it which is slightly less (I wanna say ~10days or so) than our Gregorian calender.

Yeah, I always forget time is a made up thing and things like gravity have an effect on it. Boggles my mind.

Billions is an exaduration imo, life on Earth would be so advanced that our brains would of developed far beyond matter lol.
But then again, time is the nothingness in dark matter that is space. In enough time, the survival rate of every species drops to zero. there are countless millions of pitfalls, ways we can destroy ourselves or an anomoly from outside our planet can with or without our influence. All organic races encounter this hurdle and the odds of over coming it are astronomical, that's why we don't find other species. They've had their time and eventually all organic life is extinguished.
Will the human race be one of the mythological races that overcomes the organic pitfalls before its too late? Our history tells us not damn likely lol, we're doomed.
Considering the universe [most likely] has a finite timeline it is impossible unless some species manages to breach into other dimensions if they exist. Or into neighboring universes for that matter. I say most likely because many believe one of two things. The universe will reach a point where a reverse big bang happens and everything starts over. Or everything keeps drifting further away from each other and eventually all stars stop being produced and eventually die ending any possible chance of life.

Bismarck.Josiahfk said: »That was my point, if humanity found a way to move past organic boundaries then we'd stand a chance. For example program a machine to travel endlessly and search out suitable empty planets or asteroids of composition it can mine materials from etc then using our DNA we give it, take human life to that planet. The machine can survive on solar power endlessly. Never needing food or room or water.
And make 1000 if these to roam the galaxy or a million. Our organic life would break its confines.
We'd need to live in a space station or something with its own very powerful power source, since stars would stop being produced after a while lol. We'd need to mine stuff in space or send out robots to mine. Not to mention strict food and water control so resources last

Why would we send our technology anywhere if there's nowhere else to live? lol

The only way we could survive "endlessly" as you put it is to not rely on the sun for warmth or energy. Planets would become ice cold and suns would stop being produced in time. If we wanted to survive endlessly we'd have to find another way. Even then, if the universe goes for the Big Crunch we'd have to find another universe or something to live in.

So instead of ....
It would be...
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
