Is there really much of a story though? It really all seemed kinda weak to me through gameplay...
There is a lot of story.

Just look at channels like ENB, he's been breaking apart the game finding lore, and reading up on lore discoveries and discussions for the past year and a half, and things are still being discovered about the game's story even today.

It doesn't hand it out to you like every other game does, and that's going to turn off a lot of people, but it excites me and makes me want to know more about it.

As deep and mysterious as the Dark Souls story and lore is, if they would have just told it to you as you played the game then it wouldn't be that great. The whole reason that it excites people, including myself, is because it's a mystery and you have to discover it for yourself.

It is definitely a different way of handling story, much of it is left up to your own interpretation with a ton of clues in item descriptions and the world itself.
