Is this topic about discussing whether we believe love can be proven..
Or whether we believe in love?
It sounds different in my head. XD It's more or less just hinged on the quoted Angelkiss post.
He wanted to see what people would say.
Love is simply a concept like many other things.

idk i just did, why does everyone on this forum question every little thing i do on or stop doing? i am starting to feel somewhat like a celebrity around here.
Celebrity in the sense that everyone knows your name, cares about what you're doing, no matter how much they may or may not like you??
Weird..

I don't think that is the same as "crotch in face"
But regardless, this thread is about Love not Darki.
Do you think your baby loves you?
Not making this into a negative conversation about your baby.
I just wonder if you believe that a baby has the ability to "love" yet.
This question is open to anyone really.

I only asked a question. :O
Babies have an obvious connection with their mothers, but I think the definition of love would have to be clearly defined to have an opinion on whether they can love at that age.

Do babies love?
essentially that's the question.

Yeah, I didn't really answer your question Vinvv, but I think love has so many different meanings. >.< Personally I'm not sure that a baby's attraction to his mother is much more than instinctual. I'm not a momma though. :3

Hmm.. Babies dont know how to love in the sense you're thinking, But they definitely have a bond to their mothers that they dont have with anyone else.
I consider that love.

I wouldn't say that love is an actual emotion, but it certainly exists. If anything, I'd size love and hate up as being sociological traits. Mankind developed societies and in turn helped shape their own evolution. Emotions are a really new event in evolution in general, as is the conscience. Not everyone is born with a conscience still to this day, something like 7% of people develop without one and thus have a hard time differentiating between right and wrong and are typically natural outcasts within society because of it. The probability they turn out to be an all-out sociopath is very high as well.
The way society tends to traditionally define love it doesn't really fit into the classification of an emotion. Emotions are usually brought about by inside and outside stimuli, and are highly influential. You can go through several emotions within an hour, but love seems to be more of a social connection. It's more of a bond between two people who find base attractions with one another. Hatred works the same way, and I would not consider it an emotion either. Both are triggers for emotions though!
Example: Love can bring about happiness, joy, etc. When you're around someone you like then you are much more likely to be in a better mood, thus exhibit more positive emotions.
When you're around people you hate it would be much more easily for you to become annoyed, thus exhibit emotions such as anger.
My perception on love, hatred, and friendship are that they are nothing more than social developments that were created indirectly by people themselves. We are taught about love, hate, friends, and everything in between through society, and we use these concepts to form bonds. We justify our base attractions caused by simple, natural things with these terms (love, hate, friendship). They are definitely REAL in concept, but it's basically just putting a face on natural attraction. These terms are what we use to describe the survival of the pack mentality human society has developed. We formed societies to protect ourselves and produce food. This in turn made us much more intelligent.

True. But they can outgrow that rather quick lol. And I think they would have a similar connection with anyone if they thought it was their mother and such

I didn't mean it was a good idea, was just pointing out it's not AS bad.
As for babies being able to love... I'd say they can. IMO, as long as you can form some sort of opinion about something, you can feel love. And babies at least seem capable of opinions.
Whether they're conscious of of the love they may or may not have, I don't know.

I think so. It's an emotion(or bond between two mind you, it's not really an emotion) that any one else can feel. I don't think it's to the extent of what people actually define it but I do believe that there is a strong loving bond between the child and their parents.
Of course there are other examples that prove the love to be one sided because lets face it, not all parents are good parents.
Also, loving your parents unconditionally isn't exactly correct. In a stable home sure, but there are many, many homes that are completely unstable and many children that wouldn't mind never seeing their parents again. Yeah I understand some children say that just to say it but there are some that really mean it and actually do leave and never see them again.

It just goes back to what you were talking about earlier, about how animals "form attachments" but we project our values on that and we (as humans) make the judgement call on whether it is love or not.
Again, this stems from whether or not we can really know anything at all from perception...I would suggest that if we can observe a given behaviour, and note the levels of biochemistry involved to bring about that behaviour, that we could conclude that a given feeling exists in a creature that can't communicate that directly to us.
As to "love as a concept"...you do realise, too, that "attachment" is a concept also. Simply using a different, less-loaded word (like "attachment" instead of "love" or "distress" instead of "fear") doesn't preclude our ability as rational creatures to determine if something is occurring no? ^^ They are all conceptualised guesses or estimations of something we perceive...so if we are allowed to trust our perceptions and judgement, then we can comfortably guess whether or not babies or puppies love, too. :p Amoebas...well...we need stronger microscopes, perhaps. :p

Didn't someone say quite rightly about being an intangible concept made real by our on belief?
Or something like that on page one or two....

I consider that love.
I think it's like for up to first year of a baby's life, it reacts to those around it emotionally. Like if a baby falls or gets whacked in the face, the reactions of the people around it determine how it responds, not what it actually feels.
Hence why a half way decent mother will bond with their baby. It's the baby regurgitating the emotions from it's mother. So essentially a new born will only mimic the love it receives.

I don't have anything against my parents. They've tried hard with me and all my siblings... But honestly, I wouldn't care if I never saw them again. Same for all of my family. It's not like our home was "loveless," and it's not that I don't like them... But they're nothing more to me than normal people. I've never seen any family member as being more than just 1 of the 6 billion human inhabitants of the earth.
Idk why, but I'm not exactly normal psychologically either. When i was 10 i had to see a psychologist because I kept saying things that worried my parents (things about life having little value). There was worry that i was suicidal or a sociopath, but I turned out not being either. I remember the psychologist saying that "this child doesn't feel or understand love" to my parents. I remember that VERY clearly, but i don't remember anything else they had said. They did discover that i had a very high IQ and wasn't getting enough challenging education at home, so they tried to force me to go to some fancy school. I refused it, because we're very poor and i was well aware of the cost. Wasn't practical... But! May have lead to bad development on my behalf :P

I dunno, that's kind of tough but if you think of it, a baby won't know what love is until you start being loveable with them, telling them to say i love you and you back at them, showing emotion.
Leviathan.Angelskiss said: So can you prove or disprove love?
We accept love without it being quantified.
This was snuck into the psychics thread before it was locked.
When i get the time, i'd like to talk about this one. It's a very very interesting topic.
Short answer is love exists but not as a single entity that most people assume.
As a concept or idea, the adage goes, if you can think it, it exists. But as an emotion or force, well that gets a bit trickier to pin down.
I will say though, this one is fun, that we have shown fear to be more substantial in affecting people than love. It ain't number one any more.
