Alt-Tab, does this mean you are using True Full Screen. If so, don't do it. Just set your screen size to fit on your desktop, it will also be more convenient to access things.
My system uses 1440x900, I set my game resolution in windower windowed mode to 1440x860. This causes it to sit right on top of the task bar giving me nearly full screen and instant access to anything I pin to the task bar.
Always run as Admin (you can set it in the compatibility) and turn off secure desktop (as any prompts with secure desktop will kill the game).
Make sure you are using the Vista POL update, and you are using the latest Windower, go to the forums to verify that you are using the one that works with Windows7.
In general I found performance (at least in my case) has been better on Windows 7 then it was on XP for this game. Other game I noticed very little difference. If all else fails take that ATI card back and get an Nvidia as ATI is known to have crappy drivers in general.

Sure is 2006 around here, at least ATI has never released a driver that disabled the fan of their cards (196.75).

I love how all the Nvidia fanboys bandwagon on ATI apparently having bad drivers, with no proof of that for numerous years.

I have worked with driver level testing for years and even to this very day I dread dealing with AMD/ATI, They rarely fix the bugs I file, have poor communication and most replacement drivers they give me have new issues (even some of them cant even display a blue screen properly). When I file a bug for an Nvidia card within a day or 2 they are contacting me, getting the details of my kd and then within a week or less have a private for me to test, and work to nail down the issue. Most Nvidia bugs I file get closed in a few weeks as fixed, most ATI bugs I file never get fixed or linger for an extended time, the fix usually being poor.
So I guess I have formed an opinion over the years of dealing with them

I don't think I would have ever caught a bug that turned off the fan of a video card as, it would not have shown up in standard automation or general testing, heat would also have not been an issue as all of the machines are kept in the server lab which is kept cool to protect large servers.

Sorry for bringing this thread up again but I dont understand how you managed to fix this problem...

Its been ages now since 5870 has been out and ATI has done nothing to address the problem.

This is so bad. Im so through with this.

Alienware M17x here with 2x 5870 on crossfire and I can't get this game to play decently...

Turn off AA/AF in CCC, disable crossfire as well.

As opposed to what? Toshiba? HP? Gateway?

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't drop money on an Alienware but I wouldn't bash anyone who did, either.

Just want to know if you're fanboying/bandwagoning or if you actually know what you're talking about.

Ridiculous necro aside, 11 is a crap port of a PS2 game.

And that is about it.

I have gone through maybe 5 graphics cards and probably 20+ driver revisions since I bought 11, I have not seen any performance change as far as certain areas/weather conditions are concerned, which leads me to conclude it is simply a poorly coded game engine.
I run at double max settings using drawdistance @max obviously and for most of the time experience a solid 29.9fps (as is the cap due to the frame rate/speed hack glitch circa 2004 lol). However once the engine starts rendering ~15 characters/NPCs+ I begin to flag. If I saw 15fps in Dynamis it was a good day lol.

And if you want to essentially "proove" it. Turn all the resolution settings down and you will still notice it, granted slightly less (might get to ~16 characters before it starts to drop lol)

Amusingly enough I actually noticed a performance decrease at one point when I believe ATI dropped a certain DX8 function from a driver revision (go figure).

Option A

Alienware is at the leading edge in almost all departments of computer gaming.

Overpriced, yes. But that's like arguing that just because Microsoft has a lot of money, they're automatically terrible at making games and computer stuff.

Even so, I'd pay the extra for how awesome they look.

I've been having a hell of a time with ATI drivers since I bought an ATI card a few months ago. After the ease of updating Nvidia drivers, it's honestly putting me off ever buying another ATI card.

My whining aside, does anyone know a largely foolproof method of installing ATI drivers? I've never been able to successfully install any driver package aside from the one that came with my card. I'd like to upgrade to the 9.4 driver set (my card and PC are ancient, lol).

For reference's sake, my card is a HD4650 AGP (like I said, ancient PC :p) and I'm running Windows XP 32. I am going to build a new PC later this year, but I would like to keep this old one running as well.

This is not a ridiculous necro; I understand that the game is old but I'm not even asking for it to run better than it used to be in my old computer, I just want it to run like... the same!, like i used to in 2006/7.

Thanks, this was helpful. Indeed it got better, not as good as in my old computer but much better than before reading this thread.

I just think this excuse "the game is too old for this graphic card" is so lame coming from both NVIDIA and ATI. If it is that much of a problem, the graphics cards should come with 2 saved presets for old and new games alike.

A lot of people who try to come back to the game (like I did) or start anew have to undergo hell in order to actually make FFXI look "okay" on their computers.

When ATI Mobility 5870 and ATI 5870 were released, the best option was always to downgrade the software/drivers to version 10.4 or 10.5; nowdays we are at version 11.5 and nothing has been done to even address the problem.

This is really unacceptable. Old as it may be, there aren't a lot of good MMOs out there, just a handful of them actually, and, IMO, FFXI is one of them. ATI should pay more attention to stuff like this. Friend of mine had a lot of problems with his brand new (1 year ago) NVIDIA card and he had so much trouble to make ffxi run smoothly on it... He spent days in forums digging information to try to solve the problem himself. After hundreds of other people bashing as well, NVIDIA released an official fix patch just for FFXI players. It's not what it's supposed to happen but at least it's something!

You know what!?

I totally agree with you. I bought M17x mid-last year and I place it on my list of "my biggest mistakes of 2010".

I'm tired of driver problems, this and that... when you spend a huge amount of money on something you don't expect this or that to outperform Derp's lolaptop... You just want it to work! As a whole.

And Dell has been unable to deliver that. They still haven't fixed the freaking BATTERY "Plugged in, but not charging" problem of the Alienwares. They have released I don't know how many updated for that and the updates work for 24 hours and then everything starts again.

I'm just tired of it.

For reference, I used to use a pcie radeon 3850 with 10.5 or 10.6? i forget...

They were fine, 30fps everywhere except for near confluxes and abys-misareaux in the raptor field. huge dynamis/jeuno/whitegate/etc. they were all fine but those two situations i had problems with

I downgraded to 9.4 and it was a little bit better but that's about it.

Now I'm using a pcie radeon 6850 with 11.3 drivers and CCC is installed. No slowdowns anywhere.

Edit: glad I could help, shame your alienware is teh broken. I know at least 6 people who've purchased Alienware m-series laptops within the last year and half and have had no problems with them. They were beastly machines for laptops but I couldn't justify their $2300+ pricetag. AFAIK Dell support is pretty good and if your ***is under warranty you probably can get that stuff fixed
