I don't wanna sound like some over-the-top dramatic activist, but "that's so gay"/"no homo" is quite possibly my biggest pet peeve ever. <__< While I recognize and respect that most people mean absolutely no offense by the term, I refuse to stand for it. Language is a critical part of human cognitive development and directly shapes the way we experience the world around us. When you grow up in an environment where the word "gay"--thrown around in place of "shitty," "*** up," etc.--is the most biting insult you can spit at someone, you can't help but internalize that kind of hateful thinking.

This makes it a soul-crushing ordeal for so many children (and even adults!) who can't come to terms with their sexual orientation without feeling like they're insulting themselves just by saying the words "I am gay." That was my experience anyway, and because of it I make an effort whenever possible to explain to people exactly what it is they do every time they misappropriate the word gay like that--deepen the roots of homophobia buried so deeply within the English language and thereby the minds of all of us who speak it. >__>

Obviously lots of LGBT people do not or did not have this problem, and will make the argument that it doesn't offend them. My response to that is that I feel the same way; I no longer find it offensive to my person, but it is still very much wrong because of the effect it will have on everyone else who may at some time struggle with their identity.

I can guarantee u AT LEAST half the people on that page weren't over the age of 18. While that doesn't justify the homophobic language, it does explain a lot. Remember FFXI has people from 7-47 who play, so there's a huge differential in mindsets across ffxiah and ingame.

I don't care how old they are, anyone contributing to the problem should be told what it is they're doing when they talk like that. Nothing will ever change otherwise.

tbh i dont think telling them will change much either. im pretty sure their capacity for intelligence isn't high enough to comprehend homophobiafiedness!

I know this will sound very narrow-minded. But i learned a long time ago, u cant change everyone's views no matter how much education/information you provide them. And to some degree its futile, and so i just said screw it I'm just going to remove people like this from the equation all together.

For that reason i made a choice several years ago, which was to relocate to West Hollywood when i had enough money. Best decision of my life. Why? Because i knew it had a very large gay population. Openly gay city council and mayor.(they rotate). A police department who was gay-friendly. And more importantly, Ur looked down upon in West Hollywood if u even dare utter a homophobic comment. Ur viewed as ignorant, stupid, "trailer-trash" etc. I love it.

Yes its not diverse in the sense that there's not a lot of straight people or families. But at least i can go out to the grocery store and exchange numbers with a guy and not get nasty looks.

To clarify, I really do understand that most people just don't think about it that much. I don't think it makes them bad people or anything; it's just inconsiderate. Some people will be forever blind to the harms they cause others in this case, just as I and every person living in this world are blind to some harm we may cause elsewhere.

I do enjoy this topic though because there really is no argument in defense of homophobic speech. The only time being when it's used ironically. I luvs me some ironic jokes lol

Sometimes ignorance is bliss in the sense, its best not to think about it. U cant change everyone, and for many its a waste of breath. Let them be ignorant. Let them be "Jurassic." Their ignorance really shines when they enter the adult world, and they notice a large portion of society views them to be stupid and points it out.

i dont even get why people honestly care enough what two guys or girls for that matter even do. i mean, i wont lie, i really dont give 2 flying *** what mr. random person i dont know is doing. im too busy worrying about my own life.
