Morning all you west coast peeps. :)
It's kind of a momentous time here at Vanderbilt lately. The administration is in the process of implementing a revised nondiscrimination policy that has campus religious organizations all up in arms.
Last year, our Christian frat kicked out one of its members because he was gay. This was possible under the previous nondiscrimination policy, which specifically exempted religious organizations.
Vandy is now revising the policy to include all university-funded organizations, so now everyone will have the opportunity to join the groups they want and pursue leadership positions.
The religious groups have moved the discussion from homosexuality to atheism, arguing that this new policy would allow atheists or members of other faiths to assume leadership of their organizations. In a way, I agree; on the surface, it really doesn't make much sense for an atheist to be running prayer groups or whatever.
But practically speaking, the chances of any org being saddled with leaders it does not want are very, very low. In most cases, members will still vote for their leaders just as they do now. In all other cases, leaders are selected by an even
more rigorous interview process. In the end, this new policy will not have much of an effect aside from its intended purpose--the fair operation of student organizations funded by a university that wishes to make an admirable statement about diversity and inclusion.
I was supposed to wear purple today in support of the campus LGBT community, but I don't have any purple clothes. Why is it always purple ><!! I could do pink, but nooooo of course not lol
