Solo'd with NPC .

an NPC is just that . a Pet is just that . NPC have AI . Pets dont . Wyverns react to the Master's actions . Avatars act according to what the SMN tells it to do save for that Over protective Auto Attack function , Charmed/Jug pets react to commands given by the BST , Automatons are controlled by the PUP its why they are called Automatons.

the first line is my answer , the rest is just opinion .

Elaboration: PUPs can influence what moves their automaton MIGHT use through maneuvers/equipment, but cannot say "use this" and have it happen. I suppose an argument could be posed that you can influence an NPC the same way by changing their job.

Mainly speaking about the automaton, sometimes it's HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE AI overrides any command. For example, prioritizing -na over a cure, even if you're in the red.
