It's pretty miserable as a retail player who started a fresh character to share the game with a new player as is. After 50, you're to just roll in AF for dozens of levels. Accessories and more aren't available unless they're NQs from RoEs. New player doesn't learn about gear swapping until way too late. It makes the game look deader than it is to a new player. Now imagine it worse for a free trial character. The game is $10 for a copy and 30 days many times a year. I don't know why they bother with the free trial at all. "Nobody" Except for the not insignificant amount of people who play on pirate servers because it's free. The fact is, more new players will now try out actual FFXI rather than feel compelled to dip in to the RMT dramatorama hellscapes that are pirate servers. That's a good thing.
