What are some of the pieces of gear that have unorthodox or unexpected jobs combinations on it or are just oddly designed? As the game has gone on we’ve seen a few jobs move from “light” to “heavy” DD armor or vice versa like BST or DRG. The two "weirdest" piece of gear that come to mind are:

Created before THF (and DNC?) had native dual wield. Guess it was nifty for PUPs using dagger.
How many of those jobs go /DNC?

Most gear I thought WTF had a PUP on it.
Mostly the many pieces with refresh that are equippable by mages and somehow PUP.
One example (there are many):

How about all the rewards from Pulling the Strings that nobody ever uses?
I originally felt like I would use these more than I did:

Any time I want poison I'm like well I could wait 30 seconds and use these pants, or I could just use a Poison Potion right now...
Also because I like the name:

You lose the effect if you take off the collar.

Half of the jobs on this don't make any sense.
Also Roundel Earring matching the same jobs as Sjofn Earring was a lazy copy/paste.
BST, DRK and PLD have no native Archery skill, but are included in Shortbows like Ullr and Mengado +1
BLM and SMN have less Dagger skill than GEO, but for whatever reason are included on Raetic Kris +1 (obviously because of being on Rune Kris). Ternion Dagger has all of the dagger jobs listed. I assumed this miss is because GEO can't use Kris' but can use Daggers. But then I see Beryllium Kris +1 specifically has GEO listed. Just no consistency/sense.

Fun tidbit about these rewards. The enchantment effect wears off the moment you swap the gear off. Even the DRK ring for Regain, which is arguably the only useful piece it practically a dud since you have to idle in it.

Not sure if this would be considered weird or just extremely bad but bitter corset comes to mind.

The weird DEXless pants trend in iLVL gear.

to be fair a good amount of those were pretty good at the time, atleast the DD orientated ones, and the whm/blm/smn ones. If it didnt take ages for the enchantment to both be ready and then activate, and well just doing the ENM which varies from job to job on difficulty, and middling drop chance + weekly entry.

Gives HP+10 during the day, MP+10 at night, and 1 stat+5 corresponding to the day (example: Firesday STR+5)
This has always been my favourite odd piece. Potentially useful at 75/Zilart era for multiple jobs, but only 1/8th of the time.

I actually used Diverters Ring for a long time in my SMN's idle set. There was literally nothing else to use besides Evoker's Ring. Maybe Defending Ring if you had one but no one did back then.
I think that was true until the Adoulin era when we got Thurandaut, Varar, Stikini, etc.

Geomancer has the highest dagger skill of any of the jobs on this, and the rest of them are D or E.
Further still, the Fragmentation property on Shark Bite isn't going to help or add anything useful to any of these jobs, because they all have a Fragmentation weaponskill or possibility on their primary weapons / are all on Maxentius and can do Thicc Black Halos that have Frag property.
I can't imagine the scenario where you'd want SMN to Shark Bite.
Further still, unlike the other Beryllium/Hepatizon weapons that grant the level 65 OG capstone pre-75 Era highest weapon skills to jobs, this one is sporting a mere +228 skill vs. +242 skill.
Also think it's weird that the Trial of Magians: Defense Down/Atk down/mdef down etc. weapons cap out at +16. Why not just 20? What gives yo?

I feel like to a lesser extent there's also a weird trend with iLvl feet not having native INT unless it's specifically for mages. Some of the modern gear like Empyrean corrected this odd pattern but I still notice considerately less INT stat on footwear than the value of other stats.

I carried around one for the longest while on GEO and used it in a few situations. The damage was quite low but it at least gave me a piercing option to play around with.

what about these (p.s. i figured out photos >.>)

"Wearing the belt gives a Curse (Recovery) effect, also known as "ST20" or "Zombie", that prevents the wearer from being cured. Trusts will not cast Cure spells on you during the effect.
This belt will neither allow you to avoid curse/zombie nor remove it after receiving the effect from a foe by cycling the belt."

Curse reduces Max HP. I don't remember the potency of the grip, but it can shave off a HUGE chunk of HP even from NMs, and it has already been used that way in some fights iirc.

All of the race-specific earrings from this ENM are pretty useless (by today's standards), not as weird per-se as the could be. (I consider a race-specific earring to be weird, only because they've been basically eliminated from item level content). But, I also share this because I didn't know the ENM to acquire this earring requires everyone to belong to the same race!

Back then where the amount of power you got from gear was incredibly smaller and, as a consequence, the % of power coming from base stats was way more relevant... in such an age having race specific gear that were trying to boost the weak points of every race (which back then was a bigger difference than it is today) was, I dunno, I'm not sure I would call it good game design but it certainly wasn't "weird" or "useless" given that era's standards and meta.

Oh totally. Definitely, yes. I editted my post to reflect that they're useless by today's standards. But, if I were in my peak Try-Hard mode of playing FFXI at that level, I would have sought after 5 other Elvaans to win those earrings too.

I did that BC with other galkas! XD I don't remember if we were in 6 or less, but we did win the BC, multiple times!
I also remember loving the lv ~30 Galka specific set when levelling mage jobs!

Not so much wierd, but i've always personally found all the "Moon Phase" gear to be quite intresting. Particularly because they work on 80 hour cycles for them to be useful. So on very specific hours, they were peak (for their time) but then every other time, less so.
Intrestingly, some of the rarest items in 11's history are also Moon Phase items.

This club it's other variants are now only avaliable via gobby box, And ran from a 2002 Event. The actual buff too my knowledge is an enspell effect. (Light or Dark dependent on which phase)
Geomancer has the highest dagger skill of any of the jobs on this, and the rest of them are D or E.
To my knowledge, Dagger usage on those classes specifically has always been something of an Idea that's been flirted with. (Malevolence)
But, I believe the dagger is a throwback to an older, Dagger from 75 era.

odd to have gear with only a "negative" stat on it, but once upon a time someone probably used it for 'x-hit' builds since it presumably would give more tp per hit. Similarly I think there were a handful of 2 handed weapons because of this the HQ was less desirable than the NQ because the -5 delay or w/e caused an extra hit to get to 1k tp, and the +1 dmg couldn't possibly make up the difference.
