Hey FFXI Community.

{intro rant and boring backstory starts here}

I'm sure I've seen a lot of you around the game over the last 20 years. From Unicorn, to Fenrir and now on Asura, I've always loved FFXI, I started playing with my dad real young. It's always had a soft spot in my heart. Then in college, I found Magic the Gathering and fell in love with that game too.

These days I work too much and don't get enough time with the family, but in my free time, I've spent the last couple of months designing FFXI inspired MTG cards for a deck I've been building. All the art is unique, the stats are unique. It's all from scratch.

I personally see having some mtg cards around as a way for me to remember the game if square ever turns it off.

{intro rant ends here}

Anyway, I'm selling them on my Etsy store and I wanted to ask anyone willing to tell me... What's missing? Are there cards you think would be cool to see, that you'd like to see created?

My Etsy Store is below.

http://www.etsy.com/shop/FinalFantasyPrint

See everyone in game. Genuinely interested to hear if you've got a cool idea for a card.

Also, if you are going to roast this post, just be aware I cast Stoneskin before posting this (bad dad joke?)

The amount of effort this must have required has to be off the charts. The quality looks really good, love the art style. Good luck with your sales!

Suggestions for dancer abilities:

Tap to add charge counter,
Drain samba, tap and remove charge counter to add lifelink to all creatures under your control till end of turn.
Haste Samba, tap and remove charge counter to add haste to all creatures summoned this turn.
Lethargic daze, tap and remove charge counter to tap target creature you don’t control.

Very cool! And well timed as there is the official MtG Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set releasing this year. I believe they've said all of the numbered titles will be featured so should be getting some official FFXI x MtG cards as well.

0/10 no Sarutabaruta plains or Gustaberg mountains, and Shantotto's flavor text doesn't rhyme.

Sarutabaruta and Grauberg is in the works, but fair point, missed a big opportunity with shantotto on the flavor text lol
Edit: I just updated Shantotto's card with better flavor text...

Spoilers for some of the cards started yesterday. 2 FF14 cards have been spoilered so far, which is good news cause it means they're not excluding the MMO games. No FF11 representation yet, tho...

Genuine question, are these Ai??
because they really do look like it, and as a fan, i think there are too many obviously glaring inconsistencies and errors in the characters art that even noobs wouldnt get wrong.

Prishe's ears and hair, Lilisette's hair, it looks like Arciela has an ear point when she is a hume?????
There is also whatever is going on with the Immortal's hands/weapons.

Im not trying to be rude or disrespectful, if its AI please just call it as such, artists and those who enjoy collecting art based things of XI such as myself would rather avoid anything Ai entirely.

The idea is fun, it just needs work.

Recent magic cards use very precise wording. Failing to match that really lowers the perceived quality of the product, things like "Opponent player" on Absolute Virtue. Red mage 'enters the battlefield with haste'. Also, wording such as Mielikki's 'cast one sorcery spell' would be interpreted as forced. It should say 'you may cast a sorcery spell' without the number. Ochain has an equip effect, but no equip ability. Boyahda tree has "Tree's" with an apostrophe for plural of tree. I'm sure there's a lot more, I got tired of squinting at the previews.

The pictures of the cards have what appears to be spell check underline on words that are not in the English dictionary. I'm not quite sure *how* someone would manage to leave that in a finished product, so I am forced to assume the previews are not of actual printed cards.

Alongside the presumably AI graphic art, I have to disagree with the poster who said a lot of time went into this. It seems like a shallow cash grab off of two different intellectual properties. At least take the time to proofread before you list.

Aht Urghan Immortal needs to specify when its triggered ability happens. Usually this is in form of an upkeep trigger like
"At the beginning of your upkeep, roll a d6."

Arciela should just say Flash and Haste, the latter being a red-centric keyword.

I know you're using MTGSetEditor (can tell from the square set symbol) but there is a later addon for nickname tags below the title. Boyahda Tree is a "Wastes", and should be templated as such.

Likewise with all the other lands.

Any reminder text should be italicized and in parenthesis, in the case of Bakgodek: (This creature cannot be blocked except by two or more creatures.)

Likewise with flavor text being italicized, in the case of Genbu.

Lilisette's ability would read as if she is granting lifelink to each creature you control permanently. That sort of thing is Arena-Exclusive but wouldn't fly in paper. Just make it another upkeep trigger so it would at least happen on every turn or every one of your turns.

Maat should read "As long as an equipment named Glanzfaust is attached to Maat, it gets +4/+4."

Edit: Look if you want to use AI art, fine. At least put it in the bottom where the illustration name would be. Some of these would be better off being screenshots from the ingame client/promotional art with proper credit.

Mielikki should read "When Mielikki enters the battlefield, you may cast up to one sorcery card from your graveyard this turn." or "Target sorcery card in your graveyard gains Flashback until end of turn".

Ochain should say "Counter that spell", not "negate that spell entirely". As well as "Equipped creature gets +0/+4".

Odin should read: "When Odin enters, destroy target creature, then exile all Auras and Equipments on another target creature."

PW should read "When ~ enters, create eight 1/1 red(?) Dvergar creature tokens. All Dvergar gets +1/+1 for each other Dvergar on the battlefield". See Coat of Arms from Xth Edition for reference.

Prishe should read "Whenever Prishe is blocked by a creature, it deals 2 damage to that creature." No need for 'additional' since this is done before the combat step.

Red Mage should just say Haste.

Shantatto's +2/+0 counters almost never exist anywhere else except for two cards in a set in 1994. Either stick with +1/+1 counters or have her read something like:
"~ gets +1/+0 for each instant and sorcery card in all graveyards"

Sov. Behemoth is actually formatted correctly. Well done. You don't need to capitalize "Red Creatures", though.

Twashtar should read "Equipped creature gets +1/+0. If ~ is attached to a creature named Lilisette, when that creature attacks, roll a d6." "4~6 - Until end of turn, Lilisette gains lifelink and 'Triple all damage this creature would deal'", See the new Wolverine for formatting.

Just give Valaineral a +1/+1 counter. Don't reinvent the wheel.

Vidmapire is "As long as" not "So long as"

V. Cluster should read "When ~ dies, it deals 5 damage to each player."

===============================================================

Now that I'm done being your proofreader: I know you put in the work in these, but you gotta make sure it looks the part if you want to make it feel like a Magic card. That includes word formatting/templating. As well as the usage of the correct borders (AV should not have a multi-color border for a mono-red creature.) And that's not even going over how impossibly color-pie breaking most of these are.

One other thing: the most popular format right now is Commander. Anything with "Legendary Creature - whatever" is going to catch someones eye and potentially spark a creative deck process. None of these named figures like Arciela, Lili, Valai or Shantotto, except for Absolute Virtue for some reason, have "Legendary Creature" in them.

And, I wouldn't really care about this so much but you're selling this. For previously 50 USD now half that price. For cards that are underpowered compared to what WotC is printing today. I know it's a novelty item and I get that, but AI Generated Art isn't appealing. I look at Prishe and just see some chinese kusuge character, Valainarel looks like something out of a rejected Tencent character profile. Shantotto actually looks more Lalafell than Tarutaru and thats saying something.

The only reason why I'm saying all this is because you did put in *some* care into this project and I honestly think doing something like this is awesome. It just needs work. A lot of work. Ditch the AI ***, study existing cards and their templating, and know that MTGSetEditor isnt the only resource out there to make good looking cards.

Also, I know I'm taking a lot of people's time, but Shantotto's flavor text literally doesn't rhyme.

It's funny, I was toying with this idea myself. I have an excel sheet built with characters and weapons listed out with potential stats and abilities built... but I abandonded it because the MTG crowd is ruthless. I had some fun ideas, but there was no way I could produce anything that would be "balanced" in current play. Like Thorny said, wording has to be extremely precise and thought out.

Here is some of my ideas. Again, this is 1st draft of an abandoned idea.

I know you're getting a lot of critique on the AI art, all of which I consider valid. As somebody who built and sold FFXI related stuff, I can appreciate avoiding using any assets from SE. However, you could easily load up Altana Viewer and pose all the characters however you like. Then use that image to generate a different art style. This would probably produce a much more accurate representation of the characters. As of right now I'm pretty sure the AI art world is the wild west and you can get away with nearly anything.

This is essentially how I started designing my 3D print weapons. I'd take the image from Altana and load the screenshot into Solidworks. I'd then just outline the image to get the proper propotions and then start designing from there.

I think the critiques Hovann and Thorny say everything I would want to.

but more for anyone who looks to do something like this, I would suggest if you make a card representing a REMA to use the equip ability template which specifies the targets creature type, as an example Steelclaw Lance

Having "Equip Monk" on Glanzfaust would be very flavorful, though it is one of the few examples where a job from ffxi actually has an existing creature type in mtg. but you could have whm = cleric, thf = rouge and pld = knight, or just create a sets worth of cards to fill out the card pool for each job.

Jokes aside, very cool set. Well done.
