Anyone having issues with getting stuck in the "Downloading data..." black screen upon zoning, post update? Requires someone on another IP logging the chars in to unstick them, but it keeps happening in varying zones (anywhere from entering Ambuscade, to North Sandy, to Tav. Safehold) when I try to resume playing. Also noticed on one char suffering the issue, the names of the macro books were wiped--the macros within remained.

Researching points to everything from it's XI's fault, to modem/ router issues, to addon issues (Ashita), etc. so I'm not sure where to even start and wondering if anyone else is seeing this issue. Everything was fine before this update, now it's borked straight after.

A couple times, really irritating, but having multiple pcs makes it a simple (though annoying) fix

Post last update? So you powered through it, so to speak, and it just stopped doing it?

Since the last update it happened a couple times. Characters got stuck, I logged them in on pc2, then back on pc1 and it was fine. I don't know why crashing and relogging on the same pc was ineffective but whatever.

Thought maybe 11 was getting ddos'd again lol

Hey guys, I was getting that as well, when I was selecting my character to log in, while on the black screen with "downloading data" it would freeze and crash windower. But using vanilla PoL was working fine.

It took me a while to find what was causing this and it was quite specific so it might not be the same issue for you guys.

The way I set up some of my addon folders, specifically Gearswap / Portepacker / Gearinfo / JobDisplay , I junction link the "data" folder with all my .lua files to my OneDrive cloud so that when switching from desktop to laptop I don't need to do any copy/pasting of an newly modified .luas.
The issue was that the files that were junction linked on the One Drive were not getting updated correctly, so I had to manually delete the junction links, copy the new versions of the addons on the OneDrive and redo the junction links to the windower folder of the desktop.

Gotcha, gotcha. I used to be able to hotspot off my cell phone with my PC when my net would be on the fritz, in theory accomplishing the same thing as bugging my cousin to unstick does, But I’m even having problems doing that now. I don’t know… Seems I’m having less energy to tackle these problems nowadays to keep playing this game. Maybe it’s a sign to hang it up lol

Yeah that’s pretty specific. I’m on Ashita anyway. But who knows, it could be one of my addons, private or public, who knows. But it’s absolutely unfeasible troubleshooting all of this minutia when I have to keep harassing someone to unstick. Pretty damn frustrating all around.

I have this issue from time to time. My best understanding is it's an issue with the routing to the JP servers and completely out of my control. It comes and goes. I can go weeks without it happening and then suddenly it happens several times over a few days.

Although still annoying, you can simply use a VPN to unstick your character. ProtoVPN is free, albeit the free version is abysmally slow. But it can still be used to move your character from the zone it got stuck in.

I have this issue but it always the same zone. It used to be Bastok Mines, Now it is aht Urgan Whitegaste(which is way worse than bastok for me). If I change IP or have a friend move me out of the zone it is fine until I go to that zone again.

Do a full file check, you start it in the ffxi config then go into POL

Quote:
To Run a FULL file check/repair (do NOT initiate this via POL, this is _not_ the same thing):
Close all instances of the game
Run "Final Fantasy XI Config" Tool (can search for it in start menu usually)
Under "Other" tab do "File Check Settings" button and say yes.
Then launch POL vanilla (without Windower) and DO NOT PRESS "Check Files", just log in as normal and it will do the file check/repair like a normal update check

Do you have an older pc or laptop you can install and run xi on, just to rule out the problem being on your system?

Alternatively, if you can VPN over to another network or hotspot your mobile device and replicate the issue, that would lead to the issue probably being your system and not the network. At which point, I'd probably reinstall from scratch instead of doing a file check.

I am able to use my cell hotspot and log in to take myself out of the zone. Would a full reinstall possibly resolve this?

No
That pretty much rules out anything on your hardware
Its something network related or the issue is on SEs side

Someone with more knowhow of XI infrastructure may be able to chime in and be more specific.

It typically fixes itself after 24 hours. I don't know that there is anything you can do past that, it seems to be that a session on the server remains tied up in some manner such that the same IP/character combination cannot connect to that zone again until it expires.

I am not sure if Kuryomi is just reporting in poor faith / consistancy, but it cannot 'always be the same zone' if it's changed from bastok to aht urhgan. I would recommend waiting at least 24 hours after the last time it happened before entering the zone on your home connection again to see if it's resolved.

When it happened in Bastok I just quit using that zone for a while, but a few days later zoned there not thinking and it let me zone in there. It is the same zone/ip combination and lasts for at least a day or so. It has been over 24 hours so I will try it again today.

It has been 5 days and I still can't zone in to Aht Ugran Whitegate from my home IP. When is that reset? I hope I don't have to wait for server maintenance. Killin' my mythic farm and nyzul isle campaign.

If you change your connection (hotspot or whatever) can you login with your computer to that zone and have no problems (and repeat the zone to make sure)?
Did this zone locking always happen or did it start within the last few weeks or month (to any zone)?
Do you use a VPN, do you allow others to use your account?
Do you zone to a specific home point.

If you can login and play fine when you change your connection then it's not your computer or install.

It could be a temp issue with your ISP and it's bugging out when it tries to find the server for specific zones (i believe zones are split up over different servers at SE), try using a VPN. If it's long running it could be an issue with your router or just that you have a crappy isp?

The blackscreen issue when related to connection, usually resets in 24 hours (and it's very rare, I've had it happen once)

It used to be if you login via another IP and go out and in of that zone again, should then be able to login via the original IP in that zone.

If that is the same issue. Most of my black screens are memory issues from running addons/xipivot. The 4GB patch helps a lot with those.

Yeah, I can switch IP and use the zone just fine. It is only if on my home IP that it happens. I have really good internet at home, so I don't know why that would be an issue. I will try changing zones and rezoning on my hotspot to see if it helps my home ip. Thanks.

I am running into this issue again every 24 hours across one of my multiple characters. Rebooting the router seems to solve the issue, which is tedious having to log everything back in again...

Any thoughts on a fix? If you call your ISP what do you even ask them to do?

I had to login at another location or use a VPN.

After I had no issues getting unstuck. It's kinda stupid.

The issue went away after I upgraded my network hardware.
