Next server to see a bump will likely be fenrir, Phoenix has had an incredible arrival of new players (went from 3-400 to 1800-2500 on basic /sea all), I would say the server hasn’t seen what I have seen on asura with 5-10-30 min wait for ambu-seg-…. But it is coming, and maybe in a worst way because 1/2 of the server if not more will lvl and PT on pretty much the same ladder content. Time will tell.

On the other hand, it is refreshing to see such and active player base, even if 1/2 stay, it’s a plus. People asking to open gates here or there and so forth.

Oh yes, let’s close the server that’s mostly new players barely hitting eminent gear. That’ll keep them all playing, for sure. Server upgrades were so abysmal that they can’t even handle new players running to Jeuno for the first time.

SE really out here to kill their momentum for XI to usher in maintenance mode

Uh, citation needed? I've never heard of anyone having any difficulty reaching jeuno, what is this utter nonsense?

What's the problem here? A bunch of people in eminent gear can work their way up through the game. I don't see the problem with this at all.

Oh yeah, the fact that all these servers keep capping out and populations are exploding is clear evidence that their strategy is failing. After the 12th server is capped, then we'll REALLY know for real that they're mismanaging the game.

I can't tell if you're serious or not. you kinda seem like a dumbass the more you post so who knows ig

a closed server is a horrible experience for a new user on FFXI.

bahamut and odin economies are looking horrible, asura was the only self sustaining one. not to mention there will be no other net new players for them to play with post closure, had you considered this?

Aside from the economic cluster *** closing causes

The apparent new player problem is what they don't seem grasp. If all new players went to phoenix then phoenix closes. All the newer players are forced to the next server down,

How in the *** do you get new players to group up when you keep cutting them off at the knees by locking them out of the server that all the new players go to.

It's the most basic rule of management they're breaking.

Thanks.

It really seems they aim to have all servers at more or less the same population, and are going down the list from most populated and still open, shutting them down one by one, until only one server is left open the one with the lowest population.

Once that too gets to within some % of the closed servers, all servers will be opened up again.

Would expect voluntary server transfers to lowest population servers at no cost, but since server transfers are a big money maker.. not surprising they haven't.

They've successfully brought 4 servers up to a viable population level. There's no longer one megaserver sucking up all materials from everywhere. Scarcity is a mechanic again. I don't think they're actually hurting their game's prospects or the ability for new players to get groups or advance.

Veterans playing on those servers don't want to go to the AH, see an item isn't up, and have to find another way to get it. They don't want to pay inflated rates to resellers to start new mules or pay higher gil prices. RMT who can't scale effectively don't want to be closed out of markets. None of this is bad for the game; the players will eventually interact more directly to get the items they can't find and that'll drive opportunities for the new players.

Closed auction houses are a net benefit for the game's longevity. The only real complaint is that it's impossible to bring your friends with you to one of these servers. Course, SE doesn't mind getting an extra transfer fee (or 6) if you move out to Shiva or Ragnarok.

I don't really think SE is doing anything wrong with this strategy. As I've said many times, they have very little ability to scale their servers due to relying on single-thread execution. But, I still have the idea in the back of my head that they aren't actually that limited and the closures are primarily a technique to improve engagement and retain players.

Except for the part where everyone starts leaving closed servers.

It would be different if the population held steady (odin) but bahamut instantly started collapsing

They're causing a gold rush then blowing up the mine.

It is a good thing for new players, there’s now this huge new player base that will grow together-ish. Yes some might have friend, get tons of carry, some will drop, but it is a good thing as a whole. The /ae channel is slowing down last few days which makes me think they are setting up LS and communicating internally now. They will makes their friends list and next thing you know few might start to even post here, for the good or the bad. I totally disagree on the assumption "how can those new players get thru the game" or whatever was said earlier.

Godspeed to those new players and /welcome.

Asura: 2504
Bahamut: 1704
Odin: 2129
Phoenix: 1943

Compared to like..
Cerberus: 624
Sylph: 653

Doesn't seem like a playability issue to me. Feels like bias. I haven't heard any Bahamut players crying that they can't find groups any more. It's also JP time, so that's skewing Odin up and Bahamut down.

Gonna assume that's an exaggerated estimate because Sylph does not have close to 700 lol I was there up until last week and it was barely pushing 350-400. That's even just an estimate since at least half that server multiboxes too.

Although there has been a slight decrease in the overall player population on the three servers that are currently being restricted, the server load remains relatively unchanged overall

This is the frustrating part, it doesn't even work like they want it to.

Because it still costs $18 to leave. They need to add discounted, or even better, free transfers off of overcrowded worlds.

no can do, that would have been the smart way to approach this but it wouldn't have made them money.

free transfers off NO transfers in and still allowing new players to create is how every single game in the history of the world has handled this issue. but this is SE

Double the cost to leave the spam.

"Did you go to Asura because you wanted a cheap +2 neck and then forget to leave? Hope you've enjoyed those shouts and queues. Did you instead go to Odin or Bahamut out of FOMO from not making it to Asura in time? Introducing the 'Merc your way off this server' campaign! For the low price of $35 you can make your escape! Tunnel your way like a meeble to a new land. Will you seek fame and fortune on Fenrir? Perhaps you'll find a milf on Sylph to live out the rest of your days."
