You won't rank up from doing one and only one thing. You have multiple buckets to fill of content. Overflowing one while another is empty does no good. They all have to be a certain level and then you rank up.

in 14 they make you do that (unique number of crafts), i'd never rule it out as possible unless they ever release a list saying the actual criteria.
and it is displayed, in 14, with checkmarks on the synthesis list

the synthesis list does not exist in 11, I am prepared to fully rule it out unless we have any reason to believe there's any tracking whatsoever

examples:
the Fisherman's Heart NPC reports out fishes caught
the moogle during the April event reports out total kills and deaths and parties joined and so on

but I've never seen any evidence that the game actually tracks the distinct items you've made, since it's not reported anywhere

at that point we're just tilting at windmills. go talk to every unique NPC. etc.

Have you walked over every yalm of space on every map?

I did deliberately omit this when I put "and so on" because oh my god if they really do give you MR points for it that's the worst incentive in the universe

If you do the Quest Snake on the Plains are you forced into a Campaign Allegiance change? If so, will that erase my campaign ops progress in Bastok (S)? I ask because I notice that quest is in the wiki as the first quest in the Windurst (S) quest-line which I HAVE completed but somehow have not done Snake on the Plains (no title), but I did complete The Fighting Fourth and Steamed Rams, the equivalent quest chain starters for the other 2 nations.

once you have done Ops in a particular Nation , they are done and will not be erased as completed. you can at any time when allowable change to a different nation . but there is a quest need to change allegiance, it says in the wiki you lose 2 medal ranks but that is incorrect. i changed from sany to bastok and maintained Medal of altana.
Changing Alliance
To join a new allegiance (for the first time), speak to the appropriate NPC listed Choosing Alliance and complete the initiation quest.

If you are currently undertaking one of the initiation missions for another city, you must cancel that mission prior to attempting to change allegiance.
To change your allegiance to a nation you have previously joined, speak to the allegiance changer and pay 300 Allied Notes

Iron Rams - Houilloumie, Southern San d'Oria (S) (I-9)
Fourth Division - Fridolin, Bastok Markets (S) (E-8)
Cobra Unit - Mhoti Pyiahrs, Windurst Waters (S) (H-10)

First swap is free (so you can go Sandy -> Bastok -> Windurst and not lose the Medal of Altana), all subsequent swaps into the same nation lose 2 ranks

How about the 2 'Her Memories' quests that are unique to each nations. Is it possible to still complete those by changing allegiance or are those 2 quests not possible to get anymore after passing that point in WoTG?

As Avereith said it’s just 1 currently, the allegiance you had when the quest was done.
When SE eventually implement the New Game+ feature, all 3 of “Her Memories” KIs may be able to be acquired if they let you keep your KIs.

There's no additional KIs, all three quests just reward the same thing and lock you out of the other ones. It's the same thing with the two subjob quest options and the two lu shang's options.

Rather than redo 10,000 moat carp again, I'd rather they let us do the locked-out coalition assignments, those would be more interesting.

So to my understanding and based on my spreadsheets, these are the only "locked" and/or "Mutually exclusive quests":

- The Rivalry / The Competition (10k moat carps, depending which brother you accepted the quest from, ONLY ONE is completable, the other is gone forever)

- The Old Lady / Elder Memories (sub job quest, depending on whether you earned it from Selbina or Mhaura's respective NPCs, cannot do both)

- Her Memories: Azure / Verdure / Carnelian (these 3 are exclusive to the nation you're aligned with when you progress to this point in the story, and changing allegiance will not allow you to do the other versions of it, as it is tied to mission progression)

- Synergistic Pursuits - (This quest was the ORIGINAL method the game introduced to UNLOCK synergy. When it was new, you didnt automatically have it on your lists of crafts. Later on it was changed, and the quest removed from the game as a result. If you didnt do it back then, it's gone)

- Ad Infinitum - Placeholder quest at the end of the storyline, cannot be completed / dead end.

- A Moonlight Requite - Placeholder quest at the end of the storyline, cannot be completed / dead end.

This means if you're tracking your total quests, there will be a grand total of 1025 quests in the game, -7 that cannot be completed. So if you've done 1018 quests, congrats; you've done 'em all!

Synergistic Pursuits unlocked and completed for me the moment I unlocked Synergy (or maybe it was when I did Synergistic Support) and that was like 4 years ago. It also did the same for my alts about 1-2 years ago. The quest itself might be removed but it still seems to flag completion for whatever reason.

EDIT: Can completely confirm it's from doing Synergistic Support. Just did it on a mule and got it:

Before

After

I'll have to cross reference my in game list again.

At the time of making my spreadsheet, I had not seen it on my list, nor seen it on Chronicle which I used at the time. Also my XIChecklist just shows all complete, so I never bothered to go back and check again. Obviously I've done Synergistic Support.

Good to know though

EDIT: Confirmed. Never took the time to notice that the previously unavailable Pursuits quest suddenly populates complete after completing Support

It's entirely possible that from some point of its removal until an undefined later point, you didn't get it automatically for finishing Support, but maybe they added it back in afterwards and everyone who didn't do it before but did do Support afterwards got screwed out of completing it. That would be pretty shitty, but on par for SE.

Isn't there a KI (from RoV? from completing WotG? I don't remember) that gives you a "perma" Medal of Altana?

I might be mixing things up in my memory but I've never ever ever lost my Medal of Altana ever since so I wonder what's at play here?

The threshold for rank medals depend on whatever progress of your current past nation of allegiance you're allied to, so you'll never get demoted if you're allied to Sandy and finished all Sandy S nation story quests. . As you complete the nation storyline quests, the threshold goes up from lowest rank to medal of Altana depending on current mission you're on and you won't get demoted but you still have to rank up getting allied notes from Campaign battles or Ops.

The RoV KI only lowers the timer for regenerating a Ops credit to 10 minutes and time between Campaign evaluations to 1 hour .

Yeah, with WotG complete you don't lose the medal from evaluations, but you do still lose it from swapping between nations after the first time.

Oh ok, I don't think I've ever swapped (past) nations, so that's why I never lost my Medal of Altana that way.
I *think* I originally levelled up to Medal Of Altana through campaigns (doing a lot and I mean a lot of campaigns, not so much campaign ops tbf, always repeated the same ones, usually ones alligned with defending a Conquered base, or the opposite helping send the beastmen away from an unconquered base), but I remember if I didn't gather enough allied notes that month, I would lose my Medal.
And that changed when the last mission of WotG was released I suppose.

Thanks for refreshing my memories!

I've swapped past nations dozens of times while doing ops based on the zones they controlled, it's just a two rank loss each time which comes back after a very small handful of ops. Basically just a minor annoyance now.

Wait, are you saying the ops I have completed while in Bastok would still be considered completed if I was in a different nation? So I can just change nations to try and get a campaign op that requires enemy control that I can't get now since Bastok owns all their zones?

Each nation has the same Ops, but they only count as completed FOR that nation. Pit Spider I (S), Pit Spider I (B), and Pit Spider I (W) are all 3 unique missions in the eyes of the game. They populate in the missions list separately.

Theres 82 total Ops per nation all of which are identical other than the "Beastman Stronghold" Boss one. So that means there's a total of 246 TOTAL Ops.

So to answer your question directly; No. Each op per nation is unique. If you finish ALL 82 Ops in windurst then change to bastok, you'll have none completed in bastok. Do em all over again.

The reason jumping around from nation to nation is so important is because on any given week, between player efforts and controlled territories, some Ops (especially rarer or more difficult to unlock ones) will be available in one nation and not the others. There's no lockout to swapping nations, you just lose 2 medals, which is 2 hours of exp/ops completed to reclaim them both. Jump around, pick up the hard to get ones, then work on grinding a nation you're working on until the next week or later in the week when a new Op becomes available.
