I don’t think that’s true. I’m pretty sure he’s solid in that regard. He’s just an on-again, off-again conservative.
He only plays the devout Mormon card when it doesn't interfere with his political career and it gets him shitloads of criticism in the LDS community. This is why he backed off touting religious viewpoints during his campaign for president against Obama, his beliefs didn't sit well with voters who labeled him as a "crazy Mormon", especially among other christian denominations.
He's definitely a conservative when it comes to politics, but because he is (and always has been) critical of the president and broke rank with the other republican sheep in the senate impeachment trial, he is getting and will continue to get flak.
I don't agree with the guy, but I respect him for having the guts to think for themselves and not just tow party lines just as much as I respect the Minnesota, Maine, and NJ House dems that voted against this ***even starting.
