There was how much time between ban wave 1 and ban wave 2? We should wait and see what happens. Give it a week, chill out.
"ah guys, come on, so nothing happened this week, just keep waiting, it'll happen next week"
"ah so yeah nothing this week, but I'm sure they'll do something eventually"
"hey remember that thing we were waiting for, well the game shut down, it never happened, guess we should've not forgotten"

I know you're HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE, but are you that HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE? You think one guy botting sparks is WORSE than the duped medals, holy *** ***.
a single cashout of sparks is what? 2 mil?
automated, you can easily cash out 3 times a day, so 6 mil per character.
108m per alliance per day.
over the given 3 years, 118 billion gil.
this is entirely 'new' gil, introduced into the economy, the amount of damage that does affects everything in game.

.....by quiiiiiiiite a bit
I'm clearly not saying it will. I am saying it is dumb to say it definitely will not, and this is ignoring the fact that you're presently assuming that they haven't banned buyers already which we cannot know for certain.
And if you just sit and wait for it to happen. it WON'T.
If you just sit idly by, they're not going to be motivated to do a god damn thing.

Okay, then let's make a plan bud. How do we verify anyone has medals? How do we get SE to care? What if they already did ban everyone who had more than a few hundred?
I'm happy to get on board, it has no potential to hurt me and obviously I wanted it fixed in the first place. But, whining for the sake of whining on here isn't going to help. So, let's hear a strategy.

My strat is scorched *** earth. Remove every single *** thing sold by any account that duped. All the crocea mors. Gone. All the rostams. Gone. All the +2 necks. Gone.
All I want is people to stop pretending square will do something and not forget that nothing will happen.

That's not a strategy. Let's say I believe there are all these hidden troves of medals. What should I do to help solve this problem? How can anyone reading this help?

i love how you think you're somebody/anyone cares about your ability to use tools others created. it's cute. As long as you hide behind a sock account you can pretend to be able to do anything. All we know about you is that you begged Elidyr for free medals... so if you could make tools then surely you would, rather than beg Elidyr for them?
you're really dumb dude, you're starr right?
if i said who i was it would mean the same to you as "spengler" i have never posted on ffxiah in my life.. several people who know me off ffxiah have confirmed this

the amount of new gil introduced by duped medals is exactly zero.
the only effect the medals will have will largely be on themselves and anything down the line in dynamis divergence.
meanwhile the 118 billion gil introduced will have an effect on the price of everything for everyone, for the literal years+ it will take to filter out of the economy. introducing new money into the economy is far more damaging than breaking any one minor market item.

We can't SOLVE it. I just want you to stop IGNORING it. Stop pretending like there aren't thousands of stored medals. There absolutely are. And stop pretending like it's not a problem. (I know that it's not a problem, to you, specifically, it's free money)

I mean assuming a SQL backend to the game a simple DB query would list amounts held by char. Seems to some degree they would have to prove intent over ignorance if they were doing anything aside from removing surplus. Even then what effect would removing the items even have at this point.

If all you want is for me to cry about how many medals may still exist and how horrible it is, that's not really how I am and it doesn't seem productive. This also kind of reads like a continuation of your 'wahh, shields too stronk' stuff that you've been on about since last year.
I may have found a solution, though:

Don't gotta cry about it. Don't gotta complain about it. Don't gotta do anything except acknowledge that it's (still) a thing. and don't count on square to do diddly *** about it.
Don't buy that *** that it's "over" and definitely don't believe the fake number the STF makes up for november bans.

If I thought there were millions or even hundreds of thousands, I'd be pissed too. But, as Xanders said, a simple query will reveal all characters with however many medals SE deems to be inappropriate instantly.
It's not unreasonable to believe they queried for all characters with over [500/1000/2000/whatever number helps you sleep at night] medals and then investigated them for the source of the medals. It's what most logical people would do when confronted with a situation like this.
You're not thinking about it like a programmer though, you're just seeing how many are being crafted with and letting your hate for shields flow through you.

he also said that everyone that had stockpiles of medals is untouched.
I can say that some of the ppl i know of who bought medals in large quantity have been left alone thus far.
Not only can they see who has what, they can see how much gil they obtained during that time frame. They just aren't.

Yea, people who bought them. That's hundreds, or very few thousands, of medals. Maybe the game got an influx of an extra month's worth of medals because of it, what is SE supposed to do? Take people's medals they paid gil for and give them nothing? Ban people? These aren't good PR.
If people who duped them had chars full of 50,000 medals each, yea, I'd be upset. The only reason to be pissed about crafters having stashes of a few hundred is that you aren't a crafter and you don't have a stash of a few hundred.
It's not harmful to the ingame or rmt economy, it's not giving anyone more than a few billion worth of gil(they still paid for the medals even.. just 1/3 as much), and it makes items that a lot of people want cheaper in the short term.

Yes. Take them away. I already said that.
They all knowingly bought duped medals. With zero repercussions. Start giving repercussions.
Not bans, necessarily, but take the gains.

That's just not reasonable. If a regular player saw medals were cheap and spent their last 2 months savings buying a few stacks, you can't just take the medals away and leave them with nothing or you end up with absolutely awful PR.
What if someone was hoarding medals and panic sold when they saw they were being duped for fear price would hit 0? Does the person who got that 90m stack cheap get to keep it because it wasn't technically duped?

By your logic why stop there? I mean after all the medals, necks, and SU5 are gone lets look at the effect it had on the market. I mean prices dropped across the board so why not hit everyone who got some items cheaper than normal. Hell lets just ban everyone and shut it all down >.>
You just like reading your own posts. No point in this going any further lol.

Is there any world in which banning accounts or removing dupe-linked items without giving refunds will NOT lead to people rushing to just buy more gil to replace said items/

You have to draw an arbitrary line somewhere.
Medals and all things made from medals.
Doing nothing is the only unacceptable answer. And its what they're doing.

Don't forget about relic upgrades. Some people probably bought duped medals then immediately upgraded a half dozen pieces. Better take those too, and it'd be a whole lot of work to return them their 119 pieces and other mats, so we'll just delete the +3s and let them redo dyna1 and rem's tales.
Quote: Regarding an Item Duplication Exploit
Good day, adventurers. This is the Special Task Force (STF), the team charged with investigating and suppressing unethical conduct that negatively impacts players’ FINAL FANTASY XI experience.
Several days ago we confirmed that some players were using an external program to create duplicates of specific in-game items. We would first like to apologize for the concern that this has caused, as bits and pieces of this information were posted on unofficial fan sites and message boards.
This message is to inform you of the measures we have taken to address the exploit and the punishment disseminated to the culpable parties.
Background Information and How We Have Addressed the Exploit
On the night of November 12 (Japan time), we received a bug report stating that it was possible to receive an unlimited number of Beastmen’s Medals and Kindred’s Medals. We acted immediately to verify the report, and determined that it was, in fact, possible to duplicate the items in question. We consulted with producer Akihiko Matsui and temporarily removed the affected NPC as a provisional emergency measure.
The development team then undertook a detailed investigation and confirmed that the exploit did exist and pinpointed concrete methods for consistently reproducing said exploit. As part of the emergency maintenance on November 14 (Japan time), we implemented a server-side fix addressing the exploit and have confirmed that it is no longer possible to duplicate items in this manner.
Player Punishment for Abuse of the Exploit
While the development team worked to fix the underlying cause, the STF focused on investigating suspicious players. We have completed our investigation of all characters who interacted with the NPC in question from early last week until the NPC was temporarily removed, and discovered that 45 players used the aforementioned exploit. We terminated the accounts of those 45 players on November 13 (Japan time).
We take the integrity of the game very seriously, and are widening the scope of the investigation to determine if any players used this exploit before the period in question, and whether or not it was possible for similar exploits to be used on other NPCs or items. If we discover any related conduct, those players will be punished in the same manner.
As we have communicated to players since the game’s inception, the use of external programs in FINAL FANTASY XI violates the Terms of Use, and we will take all necessary measures against players who do so, up to and including account termination. We would like to take this opportunity to again warn you against using such programs, as doing so will put your account in jeopardy.
If you witness any suspicious activity in-game or read information on how to perform such activities on external sources, do not try them yourself or distribute the information to others, and instead report them to the STF immediately.
We will continue to remain ever vigilant against suspicious activity in FINAL FANTASY XI and ask for your continued support in ensuring a level playing field for all players.
