Dev Tracker - Discussion

I suspect it’s because Dawntrail was taking up all of the resources in 2024.
From the March 2023 Digest:
Quote: So rather than limit our developers to working exclusively with FFXI and its decades-old technology, I believe it would be better to allow them to gain experience in other development environments and bring back their learnings to FFXI. As such, I have elected to further downscale the scope of our Development team to provide more leeway for our operations to continue.
From the way it sounds, some of the FFXI team wasn't just being sent out to find something to learn, rather, there was a particular project that they could work on, and when done, they'd return to FFXI.
Seven months later after that update:
Quote: Echoes of Vana’diel is the new Alliance Raid, and it is being worked on in collaboration with the FFXI team.
And unsurprisingly, around the time the first patch of Echoes of Vana'diel, FFXI's dev team sends out a survey, likely to convince a higher-up for more funding.
Now, I'm not saying FFXI is getting a new expansion and loads of new content. But drip-feeding UI changes and ending new Ambu encounters may have been what they decided to do while some of the devs were working elsewhere.

It's unfortunate that the exemplar campaign is only valid for 500k
Very. Douchey. A 3 week campaign bonus that's expended in 1 day.
(I won't get the 1m exemplar so doesn't matter to me, just saying it's not great)
By Kaffy 2025-02-07 06:27:47
yeah 500k is equivalent to ML0-ML16. Capped EP is just shy of 30m.
Its a start, but an extremely small one.

Campaigns aren't meant to replace gameplay, EP was always meant to be a grind. If you're the type of person who needs ML50, the campaign is worthless but you would've gotten it anyway. Pretty much the same argument Eiryl constantly makes about droprates.
It is probably a considerable help to the people who don't buy EP farms, don't bot their EP, and play casually. I like it.
Matsui instead of Cornelia is gross, though. Don't think anyone's gonna disagree with that.

They just announced a “limited time” subscription bundle discount for being subbed to both XI and XIV.
Campaign teaser tweet.

Would be nice if this is the first step into a combined subscription for both games.
Some more information on FF14 Lodestone:
Quote: For a limited time, FINAL FANTASY XIV players will receive a special discount for the first month of a subscription to FINAL FANTASY XI!
Sale Period
Wednesday, 12 February 2025 at 8:00 (GMT) / 19:00 (AEDT) to Tuesday, 11 March 2025 at 8:00 (GMT) / 19:00 (AEDT)
* New FINAL FANTASY XI subscriptions start with 30 days of free play time. Accordingly, for new players, the 50% discount will apply to the first monthly subscription fee charged after the free trial period has ended.
Whether you've grown curious about FINAL FANTASY XI after experiencing the Echoes of Vana'diel alliance raid, or you've been meaning to return to Vana'diel after time spent away, you won't want to miss out on this great opportunity to embark upon adventures nostalgic and new!
http://www.playonline.com/ff11eu/campaign/eov_discount/
Seems to be solely targetting new and returning players. The rest of us that are already subbed to both or either games are being screwed (unless I'm misunderstanding the Q&A).
Quote: Q: I am currently subscribed to FINAL FANTASY XI. If I sign up for FINAL FANTASY XIV now, will I also receive the discount to the basic service fee for my FINAL FANTASY XI subscription contract?
A: Current FINAL FANTASY XI subscribers are not eligible for this particular campaign.
Q: I am currently subscribed to both FINAL FANTASY XIV and FINAL FANTASY XI. Am I eligible for the discount to the FINAL FANTASY XI basic service fee?
A: Current FINAL FANTASY XI subscribers are not eligible for this particular campaign. However, if you sign up for an additional service account or reactivate a different inactive or cancelled service account, that account will be eligible for this campaign.
Q: I just started a paid subscription for FINAL FANTASY XIV and am currently in the free play period. Am I eligible for this discount campaign?
A: The FINAL FANTASY XIV free play period does not qualify for this particular campaign.
Q: I have a FINAL FANTASY XIV service account, but it is currently inactive.
A: Inactive FINAL FANTASY XIV accounts do not qualify for this particular campaign.
Q: I am currently playing the FINAL FANTASY XIV free trial. Am I eligible for this discount campaign?
A: The FINAL FANTASY XIV free trial does not qualify for this particular campaign.

Just want to point out that 500k is the bonus, not the total EXP. Assuming you're ML0 when you start and you use the whole bonus, you'd be ML22 when the bonus finishes (500k base + 500k bonus).

Yeah they are totally trying to get XIV players some interest in XI so they have something to alternate when XIV hits content lulls.
--
I would be satisfied if the exemplar point campaign was 500k per job, but I understand why it's not. I'm only disappointed in 3 +1 old cases in the gold rewards. A single +2 would have been so motivating since there is an obvious lack of Cornelia in favor of abandonment dev taru. They should at least add a tanaka galka SAM/BST that has a 50% miss rate but gives him a chance to summon a jug pet bat named 'Nerf' that cripples the opponent.

You can tell who does and doesnt bot their EP by the groans of "ugh only 500k".
Someone who gets their EP from endgame events with an extra hour at Locus on Saturday or Sunday, they're gonna milk all of that 500k.
By Kaffy 2025-02-07 08:00:54
A party of 6 real people with efficient job comp and cor roll can maintain 150-200+k EP an hour without god tier gears. So the reward is 2-4 hours of work, give or take. I was looking at it as a percentile of the total EP required for a ML50 but that isn't fair because the curve is so steep at the end. 2-4 hours of EP isn't terrible for the time invested into Vana'Bout objectives after all.

It's a whole lot more for people who don't have access to a high-quality bard, don't have upgraded odyssey gear, may still be using empyrean+2, etc. The goal of campaigns shouldn't really be to further elevate the top 5% of the playerbase, IMO. There's a huge gap between them and the rest, moderate actions to lessen it are desirable.

The 1 month XI discount for XIV players sounds fine, but if they ever make it a permanent thing it will be an utter disgrace and I hope they never do that.
Someone playing XIV and XI (2 subs) should not be treated better than a current XI player having 6 subs, why should they get a cheaper sub and make queue times longer for everything we want to do.
We will effectively have a worse experience so someone else can play for half price, just stay on XIV if you can't afford the extra $6 a month.

Us: Why don’t they give us 6 forevers of Cornelia, ML50 on all jobs, +2 earring of our choice and a Stage 5 prime for reeling in 5 fish?
Us if we got that: Oh, now even some filthy casual scrub like Richy now has a prime horn! This game is stupid and rewards the losers. Why even bother trying?

Yo man 5 fish might get me banned for setting up a fish bot and forgetting it overnight!
Think of the risk vs reward when you throw out these dangerous ideas~

Maybe if instead of paying 6 subs you actually played with 5 other human beings, the queue wouldn't be so bad.

anyone whose response is "ugh more people playing ffxi is a bad thing" should just move to a 0 population server, if you 6 box you dont need friends anyway.

Zero 14 players will start 11 and stay more than a month or 2 anyway. It's a non-issue.
By ilugmat 2025-02-07 10:50:47
The 14 players aren't gonna party either, cause none of the veteran players are gonna invite them with base 119 gear. They are also not going to group up, so it will be just lots of people soloing with trusts for no real extra revenue and so no new devs or content either.
Also those 6 boxers are party of why the game is still profitable and running.

I group up with 14 players all the time. Had several for Omen the other day and quite a few along for Vagary on Sunday.

They are also not going to group up Why would they not group up with each other? they are literally at the same experience level with the game and have a shared background coming from ffxiv.

Also those 6 boxers are party of why the game is still profitable and running. This feels so far removed from what new/casual players are actually like.
In my experience, FFXIV players are the ones who head to Valkrum and LFG cause they don't know what the modern game is like. I've had several FFXIV players reach out and ask for group to get an orcish axe for the rank 1 Sandoria mission lol. No shame in that, by the way.
Also, the notion that 6-boxers are the ones that make a game profitable is just flat out wrong. What makes a game profitable is when people play with friends, and friend groups convince others to start the game. The number of people I've met who started FFXI "because my friend asked me to" is way higher than many vets would ever claim.

ilugmat: new players don't do that. I know i'm right.

It's fine if people want to 6 box instead of help new people. But it does make you look a certain way if you say those people are going to clog up the content or something derogatory about them existing.
By Taint 2025-02-07 11:29:10
14 is such a shallow game, FFXI is old, cumbersome but incredibly deep.
Anything to help get more players here is a good thing.

The point was, for them to come in at a permanent half price. At full price, more the merrier.
