The peculiar part is that in an Era where the majority of MMOs have no monthly fee at all and already offer a much better service, we're being the ones who pay the highest monthly amount of them all and in return we get a continuous stream of "can't do this" or "can't do that" because they don't have enough human resources.
It's... ironic.
It's almost like they're tryin to let people drop the game on purpose so they can finally shut the service down and pretend they have nothing to be blamed for.
With that said, 99% of us will of course buy the new wardrobes, I know I will, so...
14 is $14.99/mo and they just charged $40-60 for the latest expansion, not to mention in game store?
11 has been getting "free" expansion content for a decade. And it's a 20-year old game, can't compare it to something built in 2021 - literally anything. It's like trying to put modern technology into a 20 year old car.

It's not "almost" like anything.

I'll gladly pay money for a full blow expansion. Adding niblets of content that you expect from the free updates is not comparable.
WoW sells an expansion. A year later, they come out with patch x.1 and that's free. You get less in an occasional XI update than in a x.1 patch. And WoW is 1 year younger than FFXI.

My inventory is livin' on a prayer, I have BLU, GEO, COR, RNG, SCH, RDM, and RUN all geared up, and switching gear from storage to inventory is a PAIN.

The most helpful addition for me here is more macro and equipset slots. I've had to delete sets for jobs I don't currently play (BST, PUP) to make room for more active jobs, and it makes it kind of annoying because I would prefer not having to do that. Now I don't have to do that anymore

I will never understand how a person can fill 20 books of 10 pages at 20 slots.
4000 typed out macros is insanity.
I know why you think you need that. It's still something even knowing the answer to makes zero god damn sense.

New updates below for master level grid for those who liked my last one. Just like last time, please note any inconsistencies / errors and I'll gladly update:

This has been their unofficial policy for over ten+ years. FFXI is like that monty python knight at the bridge yelling "I'm not dead yet".

Such a missed opportunity to make job-specific wardrobes that only load while on the job. Cash grab and longer load times chosen instead.

I think adding apex mobs to just about every classic zone would be cool. Give people a way to space each other out so you don't have to go to a place and be like "damn, all camps full" like apex bats and keep classic zones from being wastelands.
This would be incredibly helpful. I know for a fact when the update happens, people are going to turn on their bots to farm ML30 overnight for days and days, and all the camps are going to be full, pisses the hell out of as I grind every single EP point, so I definitely welcome the idea of Apex mobs in each zone as that will solve the problem and you'll never run out of camps for EP.

I've been able to fit several jobs into 100 sets, provided I don't get into job-specific niche sets (like having three Enmity sets, two drain sets, or cure potency sets across tanks/mages/etc). Recently, I started merging a lot of sets/macros into multi purpose equipsets, since Odyssey and malignance gear has a lot of overlap among the jobs I play. I just started making a full Nyame and malignance sets that all of my jobs use, and I just fill in the accessories manually every time I switch to that job. And I keep the capes in separate bags so it's easier to macro in. But it only works to a point. Eventually if you want to play with multiple jobs, you either need to convert your macros into scripts or luas, neither of which I feel like doing. So the addition of another (100 I hope) equipsets is a big deal for me

Really happy with the additional macro books, we had 20 books for the existing 22 jobs, I had to share books for couple jobs.

I don't understand this conclusion. . . the developers want us to drop the game? We are getting so much content this month. And they've been actively developing the game for over a year now when it was supposed to be in maintenance mode. If they're trying to get me to quit, they need to stop giving me content to do.

While the developers definitely don't want us to quit, there's a small possibility (though unproven, and requires info we don't have access to in order to evaluate) that the SE bigwig corporate people in charge of project prioritization might prefer it to die naturally.

One thing they're not dealing with here is that the more items you have, the longer it takes to finish loading your inventory after you zone. The load times between my main (~800 items) and my mules (~400 items) are already very different.
How do we know for sure they haven't dealt with loading at all? Gonna have to wait for the update to see that.
It's not inconceivable that they've also been working on improving inventory load times and roll that out alongside new wardrobes. It's definitely a concern that was on their radar, since they cited that in the past as a challenge for just adding more wardrobes.
Of course, it's certainly possible they did nothing to load times and they are just going to get worse with more wardrobes. Perhaps a necessary evil.

Indeed. Also it's been mentioned before by Ashita developer, who have gathered vast knowledge about the game to a point where I'd believe more than the current (so called) dev team that operates on FFXI, various ways on improving how packets are handled and how server caches equipment, which could lead to drastically faster load times, so I think it comes down to
1) SE doesn't have the know-how to implement that change, and the 'senior engineer' mentioned months back is only for the purpose of configuring the billing setup for the new wardrobes.
2) The 'senior engineer' has the know-how but wasn't instructed to implement the improvements to the way the game handles equipment, only the billing setup.
3) The server is updated and we'll see faster load times.

It's not THAT crazy to think there are people out there who want 1 book per job, and there are 22 jobs. Though yeah, would be shocking to see all 400 macro slots used within those. Most of my jobs only have a few pages of macros, and I play on a controller with lots of macro use, no gearswap.
Depending on how you set stuff up, I could also see some value in more than 10 pages in a book. Good example would be SMN, where I like to have a separate page for each avatar (11), one for spirits/utility stuff, another for some other random stuff. I currently use two different books for my SMN (only job I do that for though). And I've got other jobs like BLM that also have very packed macro palettes. Could reorganize that a bit with some extra space.

It's more likely the other way around. We know that engineers have been temporarily moved from 14 to 11 to work on a few things here and there. An investor never wants products that generate profit to disappear, however engineers faced with having to work on ancient flaky legacy software probably wish for it to go in the bin.

I still think that this was the mentality when SE released FFXIV and honestly thought that eventually, all XI players would move over to their "better" product. They underestimated familiarity and time already invested by some in their playerbase that we simply would rather stick with the systems we know instead of moving on.
Always have agreed with posters in the past who have said "its a good thing this game is a numbered Final Fantasy installment because SE is much more protective of the property when its gotten a number."

Products are not automatically liked or given the green light for having a positive profit margin if they're edging out projects that could have a better profit margin instead.
I feel it's pretty clear that based on interviews and such, at least Matsui is decently enthusiastic about the work he does and content he creates. Unless he's a really] good actor, I really don't think he wants FFXI to die.

In interviews, the rationale for the original design scope was based more around console lifecycle ( https://we-are-vanadiel.finalfantasyxi.com/post/?id=120 for instance), which is a reasonable consideration given that the console versions are no longer supported.

14 is $14.99/mo and they just charged $40-60 for the latest expansion, not to mention in game store? 14 is 10.99€/mo, unless you want multiple characters but that's not what I would call the "basic cost".
Wardrobes aren't "basic cost" either but for a game like FFXI, let's be honest, it's very hard to live without any of them for really accomplished players.
And if you ask me I would GLADLY pay even 80€ for a new FFXI expansion, rather than these silly monthly money-grabber.
Quote: 11 has been getting "free" expansion content for a decade. Wait, wut?
What are you on about? All expansions of FFXI have been sold, not for free.
I think you're mixing "free content" with "free expansion".
Sure FFXI has been offering free content, but so has any other major MMO, way more than FFXI to be fair.
Quote: And it's a 20-year old game, can't compare it to something built in 2021 Even more reasons to reinforce what I just said.
When things get old they get cheaper, even free.
That's the history of any MMO, any except FFXI who instead of seeing a cut in monthly rates actually sees them going up through tricks like these.
