EBV has 50% mortality rate. The Spanish flu had like a 25% mortality rate... Where am I going with this? I dunno. But sure am glad I don't live in Texas.

That it's a problem isn't in question.

The scope of the problem and the fear response being pushed by some people, however, is overblown.

It's interesting how the paranoia and uninformed panic here mirrors that in countries where the disease has run rampant. At least the people in third world countries have the excuse of probably not knowing any better, but all it takes here is some rudimentary research on the virus and modes of transmission to help understand the current situation in Texas right now.

Why couldn't they just transport him to Honduras? They have great medical facilities, right?

People are filthbags regardless of where you go.

It's not a Texas only problem.

Did I say it was a "Texas problem"? Refer to previous page as to the level of inconsiderate uncleanliness among humans beyond a sneeze or cough.

Other bodily fluids...People are gross.

Didn't mean to imply that you said that.

However, there are plenty of posters here who seem to think that this is a Texas only issue. Several of them are on this very page making this a Texas only issue....

I think you're interpreting some sarcastic one-off statements a little concretely.

Hence my lead balloon. Because that's how they went over.

You know what direct contact is?

Within 3 feet of someone.
no, that is not how direct contact is defined. That is how low risk contact/exposure is defined.

Yeah, cause after this, we will either all be dead or immune to the virus.

My money's on immune. Cause if we all die, who's going to collect?

They always are. At least so far.

That is, if Cthulhu doesn't drive us mad first.

you goofy son of a ***, your crazy ideas require 100% global saturation, which will never in hell happen.

they'll contain it eventually, but even if they didn't it's not as dire as rush tells you.

I agree the paranoia regarding the ebola virus is a bit excessive right now, however that comes to be expected in our hypochondriac society. It's better patients be excessively hygienic and take precautionary measures then take none at all.

Meningitis and its transmission this year for example was really down-played and it wasn't until 8 people contracted the bacteria and 3 died that people, physicians, and health officials started to take measures.

The mortality rate is higher than that.

First of all you don't offer a defenition for "direct encounter" You only offer one for "high risk" exposure. However within high risk exposure you cite

"Direct skin contact with, or exposure to blood or body fluids of, an EVD patient"

I don't even think you need to be within 3 feet of someone to inhale the aerosol they release when they sneeze or cough their bodily fluids all over the place.

You're right you don't. However every class of viruses has different sensitivities to oxygen, UV light, and heat. Certain viruses, ebola included, react with oxygen and can't survive indefinitely in air. Only certain classes of viruses can survive for longer periods in the air like rhinovirus and othomyxovirus.
