Well, when the knee-jerk reaction is MOAR GUN CONTROL when, as was pointed out, the bodies are still warm is less than tactful. Also, doesn't Oregon already have decently tough gun laws on the books? They just tightened them a few weeks go even.

Meh, gun control is just a political cause. The real issue is the gun culture and the reliance on them to settle disputes. I own guns, I like guns, but they are literally the last thing on my mind when someone is a *** to me.

No amount of laws are going to stop some random psychopath from deciding that he wants to kill a bunch of people. If he can't get guns legally, he can just steal them and/or find a dealer who will sell one illegally. I would focus more on the Syrian conflict instead of repeating ad nauseum how much the system needs to change... and then not do anything about it. We often run into problems when there is a problem that can't be solved but we try to fix it anyway for the sake of feel-goods.

No we don't. What we need is bullet control! A bullet costs 25 cents, if that. If a bullet cost 5 thousand dollars, you know the *** had it coming to him! /ChrisRock.
What happened to the good ol' days of fisticuffs and school yard beatings, and that was the end it and everyone walked away, albeit a bit foul of mood, but more or less relieved it was all over? Bullies and victims made up, respected each other, and on rare occasions, became friends and helped each other later on in life, or simply went there separate ways?

‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens
Quote: ROSEBURG, OR—In the hours following a violent rampage in southwestern Oregon in which a lone attacker killed 10 individuals and seriously injured seven others, citizens living in the only country where this kind of mass killing routinely occurs reportedly concluded Thursday that there was no way to prevent the massacre from taking place. “This was a terrible tragedy, but sometimes these things just happen and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop them,” said Ohio resident Lindsay Bennett, echoing sentiments expressed by tens of millions of individuals who reside in a nation where over half of the world’s deadliest mass shootings have occurred in the past 50 years and whose citizens are 20 times more likely to die of gun violence than those of other developed nations. “It’s a shame, but what can we do? There really wasn’t anything that was going to keep this guy from snapping and killing a lot of people if that’s what he really wanted.” At press time, residents of the only economically advanced nation in the world where roughly two mass shootings have occurred every month for the past six years were referring to themselves and their situation as “helpless.”

Bullies and victims made up, respected each other, and on rare occasions, became friends and helped each other later on in life, or simply went there separate ways? The Internet happened. All of a sudden thousands of bullies could get at you, with no way to take them aside and talk to them or get closure like you described.
So people slowly bottled up their ***and processed it unhealthily until they erupt.
You and I didn't have to worry about worldwide death threats at age 6-9 just for being as stupid as everyone is at that age. This is where parents have grossly failed their children. I've only received one death threat I actually took seriously. The internet? I blocked and reported those ones. And it was more or a rhetorical rant than a real question... but as you said, the internet happened.

The Onion... Well, at least we know when someone doesn't have an actual solution.

We need a solution that actually strikes at the root of the problem instead of swinging wildly at the branches. Since our president is not capable of that, it's better that he spends his efforts elsewhere. It may be a little difficult for him to get off the ground, though, as Putin is currently walking all over him.

Great! So let's not pretend that we do.

Great! So let's not pretend that we do. I just skimmed the article again, I don't see where it claims to have the solution like you mention.
It wasn't a reference to the actual article's content. It's an Onion article. It's something people use when they want to be funny but don't have any real input.

So, your average citizen is going to stop someone that has a gun in a home invasion situation... with a baseball bat and mace? Maybe if you live in a box. Otherwise, you're going to get put in one.

when a country has rules like this, people don't break into homes with guns.
That's a pipe dream. You're going to successfully take away all personal firearms from all of the estimated 100+ million gun owners, after they have been thoroughly ingrained into our society due to the 2nd amendment? Good. Freaking. Luck.

Random Politics & Religion is for topics that aren't thread worthy on their own and do not have their own existing thread.
Rules and Guidelines
Forum Rules and P&R Section Guidelines still apply.
Satire is tolerated.
If your topic covers a story over 6 months old (Watergate, Benghazi, 2012 Election, etc.) post it here.
Discussions on racism, homophobia, transphobia, and the like are allowed, targeted insults based on these will not be tolerated.
Political debates get heated and are meant to be intense, if you take offense to being called or proven wrong, you don't belong here.
If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen; if you prove you can't handle the criticism you bring upon yourself in this thread, you may be removed from it. You are responsible for what you post.
Along those lines, heat is fine, but sustained, clearly personal hostility is not okay. The personal attack rules still apply. Attack positions, not posters. Failure to adhere to this will result in your removal from the thread.
This thread is NOT the Flame Core.
