Incoming uncomfortable topic:
It's my personal belief that having the CCC around again and shipping some of the city's unemployed out of the city, getting them in a job where you do real work and see real results, and get paid for it, would perhaps jump-start some of the inner-city problems that have been faciliated by over a hundred years of generational poverty and race relation problems.

Anecodote incoming, take with salt:
I have a few friends who live and work in NYC. Both are gigging musicians (good ones, with an income comensurate to your average middle class worker) and one works another job on top of that teaching lessons through music store.
They both really, really hate the 'affordable housing' initiatives because they're providing nicer houses to people paying less than what they can afford making significantly more money. And they don't get to qualify.
And in a place like NYC, it definitely knocks down the middle class earners as much as it does helps people working unskilled positions.
You're paying for neighborhood, not for quality of housing.
Affordable housing is mostly going up in low income neighborhoods which means newer buildings, better amenities etc etc. But you're still in a poor *** neighborhood which for some people is a dealbreaker. You also have to win the lottery which is somewhere around over 160k applicants. There's also a racial divide at play where neighborhoods don't start to turn around until a certain white quotia is met. Nature of the beast.
If you rent Union Square, Midtown, Williamsburg or any of the swanky places to live in the city then you might be living in a tenement building... but you're living in the heart of the city. Most of these buildings are also old developments. With slumlord owners who are milking out of towners willing to pay anything to say they live a few blocks from *insert famous area* here.
Or you could rent out an illegal basement or subdivided house but that's not really an apartment is it?

People aren't going to be happy until everything is free and they don't have to work if they don't want to. Even then, they'll still find something to *** about. I say start up those FEMA camps already.
I've been an advocate of recreating the Civillian Conservation Corps for years.
Can't find a job? We've got one for you fixing our highways and bridges, rebuilding after natural disasters, etc. Pay people directly and stop hiring shady *** contractors cutting quality to get a little more money out of that government contract.
Of course, it would mean able-bodied people would have to not be lazy.
That's hard. Woah, how did I miss this post...
I'm fully with you, and (anecdotal of course) but I know a lot of people who would jump on this. People will endure for their families, even if it means living away for a few months doing projects while sending money home.
It's a better way to do infrastructure spending or spending in general, instead of you know: bailing out banks (or awarding contracts to XYZ companies).
I still say we go and build some new nuclear reactors this way, at the least we'd be able to shut the old less efficient (less safe) ones down.
