Because it is compulsory and unavoidable?
Is it? I don't recall any schools holding guns to kids' heads and forcing them to praise Jesus in song.

*** always set it on fire, it has security cameras now lol
These days Lucia is more about celebrating light at such a dark time of the year instead of anything Christian
While it is compulsory most people are fine with it, if they're not it's because they have to sing and they don't want to, not because of what it stands for.

You can see Stratechuk v. Board of Education; the appeal was declined to be heard by the US Supreme Court some years ago.

Denmark is non-secular and in all the public schools jul is celebrated. It is not about the religion but about the traditions, many going back to pagan times.
Last week some of my daughters classmates (ages 18 months - 3 years) visited a church as one of their field trips. It was a little odd for me at first, not something I would find acceptble in the US.
But it's not like Mil and I didn't know Denmark had a state religion, versus a secular country.
We don't have a big jul goat but (an old tradition) someone used to dress up as a goat and tell everyones secrets in town. Weird scandinavians :p

How harmful is it to sing "Silent Night" anyway? How harmful is it for a Jew to be forced to sing paeans to Christ?
Because it is compulsory and unavoidable? Is it? I don't recall any schools holding guns to kids' heads and forcing them to praise Jesus in song. Not guns to the head, paddles to the butt.
And yes, this is over 60 years ago. But I have yet to forgive let alone to forget.

We did that too since it was the first time in a church for many kids. It was educational rather than religious. The church we went to is pretty old, the old parts were built around 1175-1200. The newer additions are from the 1300s and 1400s. Nice church, even my mom was buried in the cemetery there.
There's also a rune stone outside that we got to see

Though, at least over here, children are forced to sing religious xmas songs(and sometimes pray too), and that is most definetely not fine. If you say so.
I never knew that Christmas could be considered so evil to certain people... Not evil, just compulsory and unavoidable. Then why is it being demonized?
How harmful is it to sing "Silent Night" anyway? Because it is compulsory and unavoidable? Would you be comfortable with being forced to sing songs that worship any particular deity?
Why not Cthulu? Don't put yourself in a situation that requires you to sing songs you don't want to sing. It's as simple as that.
If you don't want to sing Christmas songs, don't volunteer to be part of a Christmas Pageant.

I wonder how King would feel if the 600,000 Americans and 3,000,000 Expats living in the UAE had to have their children recite the Quran on a daily basis.
I don't see how a Muslim can see whats wrong with forcing others to adhere to their own personal beliefs by force is wrong, but you guys can't see why its wrong to force people to adhere to your own personal beliefs.

Some people clearly don't know what the term "false equivalence" means. Its not a false equivalence. In both examples it is an encroachment upon one's rights. To be forced to partake in organized rituals or practices for a faith you don't subscribe to is lunacy.. its called "faith" for a reason. In a secular society the state does not involve itself in matters of religion or religious doctrine.

I still don't see where this so-called force is coming from. Examples from decades ago hardly count.

The force could be coming from the citizens, even the majority of the citizens. The majority of the US could have the stance that the US is a christian nation, but that is still at odds with the fact that the US is a secular democracy. So either the constitution changes to state that Protestantism or Christianity in general is the official religion of the US, or these things start getting fixed so that the US, on the ground and in reality, becomes a secular state - across the nation.

Traditional Christmas songs are now religious ceremonies? I lol'd. Some traditional Christmas songs are religious, many are not. What was wrong was the compulsory singing of them in public school part. We in America figured that out somewhat over 40 years ago.
Catch up the late 20th century at least if the 21st is beyond you.

So now people are acting oblivious to how school works?
You don't get to up and leave. If you're not made to participate then you're still a captive audience. Not everyone celebrates Jesus's birthday. This is not a hard concept.

Gasp, secular democracy protecting the rights of minorities, what a truly anti-American, anti-democratic phenomenon.
