Seriously though, how do they know how much gil is in your pocket? It's rather disturbing. Last thing I want to do in real life is go to a car dealership and the dealer's all like "You can buy this Camry for $2500. I see you currently have $2600."
Imperial credits I can understand since they're recorded by the army and are probably accessed via some sort of secure network that only the imperial army has access to. I dunno, I dunno.

LOL! There's no conspiracy of chocobo vendors knowing how much gil you have and plotting something with that knowledge.
It's just the same thing as when you go to a store NPC they display how gil you have, only these NPCs put that info into the text of them talking to you instead. True it may just be to let the player know how much he has, but there should be other ways. I can't immediately think of examples, but I know there have been other times that npc's have asked for payment and they don't "know" how much gil the player has.
I really hope this is a joke topic....

I think the Chocobo vendors actually have thieves who work with them, and scout out your gil before you talk to them. You really should check you wallet before entering the stalls--you could actually have less gil then what you entered with. Them "confirming" your gil is a ploy to distract you from your losses.

They spy on your stuff and gil, and they report to the npc's how much you have. Chocobo NPC: I see you have 120,000 gil!
Would you like to ride a chocobo? Airship NPC: I see you have 120,000 gil! Would you like to ride the airship? Mithra PC: I see you have 120,000 gil! Would you like to ride me?
