The scenario is (sci-fi time), the male (Cain) is a high ranking figure in a species derived from humans that have the ability to do all sorts of telekinetic/telepathic things. He had been secretly--for her protection, because it is dangerous to associate with Cain--courting and and such a girl named Elizabeth for a few years.

Now, the humans have been trying to wipe that species out for a (long time) but they are currently at an uneasy truce. The humans have a black operational group devoted to assassinating or capturing high-ranking figures.

On the night he finally does a mating ritual with his fiancee (effectively a marriage where the two minds create a powerful mental link) he is ambushed and she ends up dead. Seeing as how the mental link was still being fully established, he must deal with immense scarring in the psionic parts of his mind as well as the horror of knowing she'd be alive if he wasn't who he was and was just an ordinary human/psion.

The real killer to him is the fact that as she's dying, after in a fit of rage Cain manages to brutally massacre the assassins, he remembers a duke telling him that supposedly, one who comes in contact with The Nebula (the one rip between the 'Psionic Realm' and 'Physical Realm' that allows Psions to have any sort of power) would become as a god. Knowing he can not get to a healer in time, and knowing he's only got minutes to lose, Cain musters all his mental energy left to finding The Nebula (which is in a closely guarded location) by analyzing where Psionic Waves appear to start. He finds it, seizing at this point from the strain, and manages to teleport there. When Elizabeth comes into contact with The Nebula, she cries out and Cain feels her mind sever from her body. Essentially, he caused her to die by destroying her mind, rather than the physical wounds.

He quickly slips into a state of dissociative identity disorder and deep depression. At the start of this, one of his only friends, Licia--a young and beautiful woman, one of his servants--is sent with him to another planet to take some time to try and get better. Ultimately she can get through his thick skull and gets him to open up about what happened and she helps him through it. Finally, when the worst of the depression and hallucinations are over, a clergyman friend of Cain's on this planet recommends that he goes to finally get some closure.

At this point, Cain and Licia (having been friends and casual sex friends since before this ordeal) are essentially a slowly growing couple. Should he visit Elizabeth's grave with her, or without her?
