Paper trails are nice indeed.

Hmmm I believe I was trying to also clarify which part you see as the cop out. But I believe it is in the finger pointing. I believe I was trying to say that many people have been spurned by others and do not want to just accept the blame. I won't try to sell you how my boss usually tries to do the write thing and fix it if we are at fault. Nor the part where he does stick it to people who have stuck it to him before. Or fact that I have adopted this as my policy after years of his tutelage. Or I usually try to act as a conscience when we know we are "double dipping" a bit. I guess I want to say, ain't no one virgin anymore in these things. /shrug. Gotta order some trim.

Sadly, the nature of my business means I deal with a lot of lower end construction workers, farmers, and "wreckers" (tow trucks). Some people don't much understand them new fangled electronic mails (or their fancy pants,
non-rotary, pocket phones for that matter). There's good reason for both but I was more making a point for not scoffing at the email 100% of the time (as it sounds his boss does).

Paper trails ftw! Doing stuff only by phone is silly. Even after some calls I draw something up and send it to the person I was talking to to confirm that is what we discussed. Makes it a lot harder to refute when you have everything in writing.
Absolutely correct, but sometimes explaining and getting a simple question answered via phone is better than emailing and being in-personable. I have a great report with a GC's team of estimating. They will usually consult with me on odd things that come up, that I may not even be bidding on for them. Sometimes they will email "Hey Skull, give me a ring we got a question for you" and I drop what I do and give them the fullest of my attention. /shrug

But that paper trail when something goes wrong, is damning and wonderful. Depending on which side you are on.

If someone sends you emails and you don't get around to it because you'd just rather have them call you then it's on you too at that point.
True. Most of us here, one of us ain't great at this, keeps up with their emails and dedicates time for it and when they come up, thru the day.

Still, it remains a cop out. I do business in a dishonest way because all these other guys do business in a dishonest way. This is nothing but an excuse to continue on that way.

I guess I kinda find it funny because you're saying emails are stupid but you're responding to an email they sent to you with a call. Why don't you just respond to all those other emails that you say they are all sending to you with a call if that's how you want to do it?

Maybe so, but when trying to recuperate money lost on a project (and one project in mind has screwed me big time, also partially due to my "calling" instead of emailing) dishonestly, I don't hold back the chance to get them back for anything. Usually GCs and Subs can trade off favors, such as borrowing equipment or doing some extra work for free as a trade off. But at this project we are not as friendly anymore, and no, not ONLY because of my mistake. And it is a shame, we had good dealings with them for years. Continuing to do business as usual and make a profit, is what most companies do. No one hides it. I am sure your company that employes you (I am making an assumption you are not self employed) would like to make a profit and even find ways to recuperate loss. Not an excuse, but just the way it is. Nobody pretends to be holy in this anymore.

It is funny, because I have *** up due to it but I obviously know the benefits of the paper trail to calling and vice versa calling. Where do I decide which way to proceed? Well, I don't, I have been doing the call and follow up with email to confirm decision discussed. Hell, last week I drew sketches to show what I meant, scanned it in, emailed to them with some explanation, and called the Project Manager to explain in more detail, so he could explain to the Owner/Architect.

Isn't that wonderful! I have a yellow barf spot that takes up the entire right breast of my white peacoat that I wear with skirts and dresses. I still need to take it to the dry cleaners.

I say that I'll never wear white again, but...

EDIT:

That becomes less and less, so does the tolerance for it.

Ten years ago, spiced rum and Kentucky Deluxe were the only barf inducers. Not a barfer. I did accidentally laugh while taking a Patron shot, and not only did I spit it into my BF's eyes, but also cried literal tequila tears from that incident. :/
