Yeah, because I'm on this program with the school doing a full year of student teaching, I'm basically going to be in the class from the day they start to the day they end, regardless as to when school at ASU starts. And unfortunately, the teacher already has a list of things for her students to read locked down. I'm going to be working primarily with sophomore AP English students, so it'll be an interesting experience.

Glad that you got AP! Sophomores though. LOL! You might be in for a little fun. Do you already know the material on the reading list? I'm a little curious.

I do indeed! The list is the following:

To Kill a Mockingbird
Jane Eyre
House on Mango Street
Twelfth Night
Macbeth
and some poetry off of the Cambridge list including my favorite piece by Percy Shelley, Ozymandias

So far I've read Macbeth, Mockingbird, Ozymandias and Twelfth Night, but really only Ozy and Twelfth are fresh in my mind. So, I have a month to read the rest.

Some of those selections seem "below" the point at which we read those selections for AP, but then again, I guess you can just pick and choose by preference which level to teach which piece of literature at, is it regulated by state, or have they just dumbed down the required reading in the past decade?

The only reason I ask is because, 'Jane Eyre' and 'To Kill a Mockingbird' were selections for Pre-AP in the eighth grade from what I remember. 'MacBeth' seems dead on though. We didn't touch 'House on Mango Street' and 'Twelfth Night'. I guess substitute those for 'Fahrenheit 451' and 'A Mid Summer Night's Dream'.

Do you remember some of yours from Sophomore year?

EDIT: I think 'The Odyssey' was Sophomore year for us too.

I was actually never in an AP program. I failed at least two or three English classes when I was a kid, so I was just in the regular English class. That was due to me being a lazy kid who just didn't care about scholarly pursuits, which is why I'm a university student at 28. Also, I don't really remember my sophomore English class. I don't remember doing any Shakespeare, though.

Also from what she told me, because it's a Title 1 classified inner-city school, the AP class still only has an eighth grade reading comprehension level, so she chose these works for just such a reason.

Furthermore, if I'd have to teach Midsummer Night's Dream, I'd probably want to off myself. I hate that play so much.

Well, I guess we're all lazy about some subjects at some point in our education. I still wish I was more ambitious with math in high school. That bit me in the ***.

You, sir, are a brave soul!!! GL;FH! Holy poop! Yeah...I imagine you are going to have some fun. :/

That was a miserable read. I think I would do the same. LOL!

Oh, I'm not worried. I did my internships at Title 1s, and most of the students were bright individuals who were enthusiastic when what they were learning was relevant to their lives. That's the key, really; have the students learn by showing them how the concepts apply to themselves.

Sir I have been a member of this club since you were way back when you were still in your prime!

I am insulted, now if you'll excuse me I'm going to use the driving range before I decide if I want to watch polo or cricket!

Water? No sir, not that vile game that shares the same name as our esteemed sport. We'll be using horses and long mallets.
