I am nicer to customers who are nice/pleasant to me. If they're rude or just blunt, then I am also blunt, but I won't be rude. Even to that person who was yelling at me and called me an idiot... though jokes on them, I made sure they're not allowed to shop here again (and they have tried).

I actually enjoy talking to the nice people.

meh, I disagree when it comes to tech support.

Like day 1 of my class, the teacher said "you would want your doctor to be nice wouldn't you?" I respond "no I want them to keep me healthy, I don't give two shits if they put on a fake smile or not."
But you aren't the only person that lives in this world. You have to adapt your personality to those you are dealing with. If I call tech support, yes, I want someone who is competent, but I also want them to talk to me, not just spew their knowledge at me. Being factual is important and nobody is asking a tech support person to lie, just to be nice, but they definitely need to be pleasant to work with.

Same with a doctor. I want him/her to have a nice bed side manner and be able to tell me things, even difficult things, while being somewhat compassionate. My Mom's doctor told her she had breast cancer in a very flippant way while on the phone, instead of telling her in person. That is completely rude and uncalled for. My doctor gave me my results over the phone, but that was because my results were of a happier nature. I'm sure if I had the genetic mutation that causes breast cancer, I would have had to drive to the office so we could discuss our next courses of action.

lol, that's not what they teach...

and I'm sorry, being competent and being able to do the task at hand is worlds more important than whether or not you feel like they're your friend, the world isn't a lovey dovey place. In regards to tech support, it's promoting the general use of idiots who don't know what they're doing over people with skills, when typically those with computer skills have some sort of personality difference than "normal" I find this disgusting, and it doesn't amaze me that people generally hate calling tech support as most of the people they talk to know nothing...

I see nothing wrong with telling somebody something over the phone, what difference does it make if it was over the phone or in person?

I think the funniest thing is that everyone despises customer service, yet regardless of what job/title you have, you still do some form of customer service.

I work in Finance at corporate and I do not deal with external customers at all. My customers are the sales consultants. I LOVE when they come at me all pissed off about something and I can show them why they are wrong or why it is the way it is. To make it even better, I always do it with a smile (no not an evil one, that comes later) like my only job is to help them. It is amazing the attitude adjustments I have seen in some of our consultants.

I've found that most people are very understanding. One lesson you take from working these kinds of jobs is, have sympathy for these people. It's a hard job. They take queues from your attitude.

When you are telling someone they have an illness there is more involved with just receiving the knowledge. There is an emotional blow and that person needs some sort of comfort (and not the lovey dovey thing you seem to think I'm talking about). I just mean someone there. My Mom was devastated when she found out, because her older sister, a cousin, and her father had all passed away from breast cancer. The only thing that was going thru her mind was "I've just been given my death sentence." You DO NOT deliver that kind of news to someone over the phone.

Who said anything about being their friend. There are many shades of nice and being pleasant to work with and talk to does not mean you are trying to befriend someone. It's almost like you see tech support as 2 types; complete *** or best friend; where there are many different styles/degrees between the 2. You just need to know your audience and adapt.

not a oncologists's job to deal with a patient's emotions, that's what shrinks are for...

I still see no problem with telling somebody a diagnosis by whatever means necessary.

not everyone is:

however not everyone is:

either, so you can take the doctor who makes you feel good, and I'll take the doctor who cares more about the illness than whether or not I am emotionally handling it well.

there's plenty of people in the middle, but there's very few competent, and mostly people who are incompetent.

The industry leans more heavily on the latter, and I find it disgusting.

No, the world pretty much sucks, people are pretty much emotional idiots who overreact to everything.

Do you guys believe in ghosts?

I swear to God this just happened.

So during lunch, I go to the bathroom. It's just me in there. Suddenly, I hear something fall and a strange shadow go across the floor near my stall. This happens until I get out of the stall and look around and I see this strange figure right there.

Jet, there is no reason you can't know what you're doing and still show some sympathy to someone. There is no reason to be an *** to someone just for the sake of being an ***. People who work in a field dealing with people need to put on their big boy/girl pants and realize that treating people with respect and kindness, even those who don't deserve it, is part of the job.

Should someone get hired because they are nicer than someone who is more skilled? No. Is it hard to feign kindness? No.

Take the shell off, paint it, let it dry, then reassemble.

on your first point, not saying there isn't, however too often people are overlooked because they lack the ability to put on a fake smile, but yet they are more competent than their entire staff. (some friends of mine).

on your second point: lol yeah there is...

No, people need to realize that the world isn't a nice place, and get over it when the person who actually knows what they're doing doesn't emotionally suck their *** to garner their favor.

You can't please everybody, and it's insane to try.

Please enlighten me as to the point of being an *** to someone who has done nothing to you.

Please, I would love to hear this.

There is a big difference between doing your job for said person, regardless of what it is, while being kind, and totally sucking up to them. I in no way shape or form suck up to people I deal with, yet I am still quite kind to them. It's called tone of voice, body language, and in what manner you answer their questions.

No, you can't please everybody, but that's no reason to not please anybody.
