The industry actually likes both but takes what it can get... They do frown upon people calling the customer an idiot and yelling at them though... even if you are right...
Competency in customer service is more than just being able to gather the info and spew it out... you have to be able to convey the message in a way that the customer will be able to understand it too... If you offend people or leave them confused even if you have the correct answer then you've failed at any form of customer service...

I want him/her to have a nice bed side manner and be able to tell me things, even difficult things, while being somewhat compassionate. My Mom's doctor told her she had breast cancer in a very flippant way while on the phone, instead of telling her in person. That is completely rude and uncalled for. My doctor gave me my results over the phone, but that was because my results were of a happier nature. I'm sure if I had the genetic mutation that causes breast cancer, I would have had to drive to the office so we could discuss our next courses of action.

Ugh! Customer service jobs are horrible! Doesn't matter if you're at a call center, waiting tables, or a sales associate, but at least it prepares you for having to deal with ***.
