It's simple... Ask yourself "Hey self! Do you want to marry this girl?" If you reply "Yes!" to the question quickly then you go buy the ring and you give her that damn ring... If you say "No!" then do the opposite (Don't buy the ring, don't propose). If you hesitate see the advice for No!

Nothing wrong with bickering! My BF and I have been together for 8 years, we live together, have a child together, and we still talk on the phone every morning while I am driving to work, every evening when I am driving home, and we text most of the day. That is an excellent quality in a significant other, because it means you enjoy talking to the other!

The real question is ... Do you want to get married? Are you ready for the inevitable; when will I have grandkids or when are you having babies? (even if you don't plan on having them anytime soon, the questions will still come).

For me; I have already been married and don't really want to do it again. What my BF and I have between us is awesome and I like it the way it is. I'm also 36, so there is no pressure from family to settle down and get married. Marriage to me (both of us really, which makes it that much better) is just a piece of paper that tells people that we have committed to each other. I don't need that piece of paper, because I think what we do on a daily basis proves that we are committed to each other.

@Row: Does the thought of growing old with her scare you or does it sound alright? Gotta remember that neither of you will be young forever.

Well technically for us its not. I get back WAY more taxes filing as head of household and claiming our son. The house is in my name, so I get to write off everything. If we were to file jointly, we would probably not get anything back because his ex is a snatch! :)

I have no idea how an ex being a snatch factors into this... does not compute!

Edit: not saying I don't believe you lol... just saying I don't get what is going on with that and since you said snatch I lol'd a bit.

She screwed him with alimony, even though she made more money then him. So for years they were garnishing his wages, even though his wages didn't cover 1/2 of the alimony she was awarded in court. When she found out I was pregnant, she filed a grievance against him had him arrested for back pay, which caused him to lose his job and put him on probation for 5 years. Now he has a record, which has made it incredibly hard for him to find a decent job. He is lucky to get hired on in retail because of background checks and whatnot. So basically he kept falling behind in alimony payments, paying what he could when he could. She finally got remarried and he doesn't owe her new payments, but he still owes the back payments, which is garnished at tax time. So basically, my income taxes would be garnished until his back pay is paid off, even though he doesn't contribute to the taxes I pay each year.

Well I'm kinda indifferent on marriage. I'm sure I want to spend the rest of my life with this one, and she wants to spend the rest of her life with me. But the idea of just being engaged sounds appealing to her. I think she'll be more "at ease" if we're engaged because she's had some bad relationships in the past.
Just remember to spend like 12 years salary on the ring! That's how it goes right?

Do they? That sounds silly...

The surprise is better man! just make sure you get her ring size or make sure the guy you buy it from will refit it for you after.

Edit: be smooth about it though... buy her a pretty ring for (insert next upcoming special event) and then have that fitted or whatever.

That's not a formal rule. :/

I forgot what the thing behind that is. I thought it was just two or three months salary, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, if I were a guy, I would just take the gal to pick it out. Girls have different tastes. Some gals like a more modern cut, some like something more subdued, and some like something ridiculously ostentatious.

Silly...? Or responsible?
Personally I think engagement rings are more about going out on your own and getting something special for her rather than having it picked out by her and being sent to get it lol... where's the sense of surprise or spontinaeity?!?!
