Flion, teach me how to be good at TF2 with mouse and keyboard.

I tried it with a 360 controller but the config is horrrrrrrrrible and I couldn't figure out how to set the X and Y axis to look around like a normal FPS game.

What's your setup? Right now I have a full keyboard laptop but only a touchpad mouse. It's not exactly ideal.

WASD to move
CTRL to crouch
space to jump

I wouldn't try it with a touchpad mouse a USB mouse would make it a lot easier. Start at low sensitivity and push it up as you get more used to it is your best bet to get used to using a mouse :)

My hands are laid out as so:

Middle finger on W (this finger will control W and S)
Pointer on D (This will control D, R for reload, G for taunting and E for medic calling)
Wedding finger on A (Also controls TAB)
Pinky laying over Shift and CTRL
My thumb is laying on space for jumping, but that's really dependant on your hand size tbh.

If you use 1, 2 and 3 (etc) for weapon changing then I guess middle and pointer would control those. If you don't like that (I personally can't stand it) I use my mouse for weapon switches. I use my middle roller click for melee weapon, back button for weapon 1 and forward button for weapon 2.

other than that it's just really practice practice practice. It shouldn't take too long to get a hang of. Try practicing even when you're not playing, play out a scenario and do it with your hands.

Some classes are good for practicing like Medic and engy, they don't need such advanced control. Heavy is a fairly good choice too, but there is a large difference between a new heavy and a vet heavy.

As for trackball, that's fine really as long as you can tweak the sensitivity to suit yourself.

I'll be into playing a bit of TF2 with you guys, but you'll have to excuse my lag >.>

Yeah.
Soldier isn't THAT bad starting out but don't try rocket jumps.

yeah that's true. Soldier is one of those classes that really gets better as you get better, Demo is the same. I can't play Demo to save my life sadly.

Scout more than any of those though, the amount of skill you need to meat shot pros as a Scout is stupid.

Yeah as a noob if you do well with scout it will honestly be dumb luck XD

When I was a noob soldier was easiest for me because it was just point and shoot rockets. Now I'd much prefer demoman or sniper(Huntsman <3333) tbh.

I'm mainly a medic, but heavy is my other secret vice. Pyro... isn't that great sorry to say lol, he's a bit underpowered currently (I haven't played properly in a few months) but he can still do some amazing things. He's situational but a beast with an uber occasionally due to the fact that he has huge damage up close, and runs fast.

He's a good utility class though due to him being able to get rid of sappers and extinguish people.

They actually get the good stuff usually. When I needed a flash drive to move around small little text files, they gave me a 16GB drive because that's the smallest they had. o.o
o.O
My point being the abuse you'll put it under
Also the weight of office mice is blahhhhhhhh

While fumbling around with the 360 controller and my inability to look up or down, I played pyro and got more kills with it than a solider.
Not to say Pyro can't rack up kills at all, but the higher your skill gets, the more you realise most classes have more utility than him.

Need to destroy a sentry, roll Demo
Need to do heavy damage up close, roll Heavy
Need to be a pocket for the medic, roll Soldier

etc etc.

Pyro has utility and he can do some nice things, they just need to turn him into an ambushing class like they did before. When people were new at the game the Pyro could get behind people and reek havoc, but these days people are aware.

I hope they give him some movement improvements like a pseudo rocket jump to take alternative routes so he can ambush groups.

If you do manage to ambush as a pyro you really do wreck ***, especially with the Backburner.

Canada wrecked me last night like that :/
Backburner did nothing cause I was facing him but I was reloading my time/aoe launcher on demo man after killing a heavy and he wreeeeecked me.

Edit: I love being behind enemies on pyro and seing crit galore. Even heavies drop in seconds to pyro.

The Backburner is WAY better than it used to be now that I check it out, it's probably superior to the vanilla flamethrower for my playstyle.

That weapon has been so up and down lol.

When they first released it, it gave the Pyro 50 more HP which was incredibly broken, you could tank like a heavy... then they removed it and gave the flamethrower airblast, which made it so useless compared... Then they increased the damage which made it ok, but still less useful

Then they removed the restriction on the airblast and changed the damage a bit and now it's finally balanced lol.

I kinda wish you could have seen TF2 when it was less HAT FORTRESS.

Still a great game, but I think the crafting and trading kinda detracts from what made it an amazing game.

Then again I guess I can still enjoy myself, but damn hats.

Too addictive I say.

Cool I might go on and do a offline match and see how I do lol.

Psh do what I did.
Go to a random match and *** around until you find your groove.
I played scout at first was lulz. But honestly I couldn't hit anything with the shotgun.

Edit: Tip...don't try scout or spy as a noob....you'll just look like an ***...oh and meshi has a point even as a noob with pyro you can rush enemies and do some dmg. I took out 3 heavies with my pryo because the DoT and the fact that they didn't have a medic XD

Heavy, Medic, Engineer, Pyro and maybe Sniper.

With these classes you can be a credit to the team even with limited knowledge.

Sniper is kinda dependant on whether you're a good sniper on other games.

Pyro is fun if you're not deterred from dying often.

Soldier is ok, but kinda difficult to get to grips with, Demo is like Soldier in hard mode.

Scout is hard to play, but fun.

Spy is... no. Just no.

Medic is easy peasy to play but there's a big difference between a good medic and a new/bad medic. Most important thing to remember as Medic is not to heal the same person as another medic unless that patient is very close to death or the medic clearly can't save him.

Also as a Medic, other medics are VERY high priority, actually highest priority in most situations.

As a medic it's all about situational situations. For example in a situation where a scout is heavily wounded but retreating, a heavy is at full health with enemies bearing down on him, and another medic is running after the wounded scout also with a low amount of health you'd be confused as to who's important to heal first, it's all dependant on the situation, you have to be constantly thinking ahead and planning. Also knowing when it's a good idea to use the Kritzkrieg or the normal medigun.

Engie is easy but provides a vital role in transportation and making footholds.

One teleporter to the front lines can win the match quite easily, and being ready to repair and replace buildings is important. Don't just turtle unless you need to turtle.

Build dispensers near a forward base so people can create a foothold etc.

ok enough waffling.

I got it to work, but the problem is strafing. You have to do so much to make your 360 controller work like a regular FPS on a console it's not even worth it.
