Oh wow tyvm all! I didn't know my hubby made this post on my behalf, but wanted to hop on and say thank you all :D
And thank you Don for creating this thread, though I see above I'm supposed to lose you because you weaken my story lmao! /drags Hykiri behind the barn
In all seriousness though, I wanted to respond to that to and settle any questions that might be had about my contest entry.
To NikoIce:
1: You are absolutely right that there's so much more I could've written/described about my life and why I need this shot at this wheelchair accessible van, and I would've been more than happy to do so if there wasn't a 450 character limit on the entry which required a summary post vs my life story.
2: I don't think you fully understand the point of this contest when you say my entry goes in too many directions. The NMEDA site ask each entrant to post about "what specialized mobility has done for them in their life", which is why I made very sure to stress the van helped us graduate, saved my brother's legs, got us to all needed doctor appointments and let me visit my husband who lives out of state. All of these things would've never happened had we not had a wheelchair accessible van so it's important to me each got mentioned in my entry.
As far as my husband that you think I should drop or describe better, I didn't go into his life story as he was also an entrant in the contest due to suffering from 2 types of Muscular Dystrophy and in need of a van as well. While I'd love to be able to write more about us in my entry, again 450 character limit and ultimately my entry is for me and my family so I simply made sure to mention that's one of the many things the van has done for me because at the very least he deserved that.
In your "revision" you had me listed as my brother's caretaker. I am not. We both live with our parents due to our illness and financial penalties and I did make that known in my post.
As far as the "stupid use of our van to take a vacation", I can only say this shows ignorance because as you repeatedly stated you don't have all the facts based off my entry. You didn't know before we left for vacation we had the van completely overhauled by our mechanic and it was in good condition when we left. Yes we knew it was old, and we knew this would likely be the last vacation we ever got to take, but do you really think we would have ever took a 10hr trip knowing the brakes might go out and get us all killed if we did? I would hope that's not your train of thought, and as far as "getting it repaired by a local mechanic"
A: We did before we left
B: We did after we got home.
C: If you think that = free or discounted repairs or that it could save our van from the unforeseeable damage it received you are wrong.
I'm not even going to step in the ring with you on the casualness you display talking about my brother's legs. You weren't there every night he woke up screaming in pain before the surgery, or how upset he was at the thought of losing his legs. You can never know how much it hurt to watch him suffer while people say "well it's not like he uses them so it's not a big deal". I'm not angry with you, you just simply weren't there to see him suffer and I hope this changes that mentality for you.
You also said I should've made my story darker to envoke the pity from others verses a positive outlook on life. Don't get me wrong I'm sure others probably went that route, but again the goal of the contest is to show the positive effects on your life from specialized transportation, not to cause mass suicide after reading my entry.lol
Finally, you ask me to "lose my happy photo for a better story". First off I promise you no matter how many pictures you look at of me and my brother, we'll be smiling in them all. Not to put on a fake happy front, but because whether in a neck brace, back brace or leg/arm casts we were truly happy. Our life is tough no doubt, but it's either make the best of what you have or sit around, play the pity card and go nowhere in life. That photo was our Christmas photo and I wanted to show I represented my entire family for this contest, not just myself.
I hope this clears up any questions you have about why my post is worded the way it is, and again I thank you all for your support! I ask you to please keep the daily votes per IP address incoming till May 10th!
