MS is still too greedy and makes their devices and formats proprietary.
Yep, only Microsoft does that
Only Microsoft
By Artemicion 2013-04-08 13:34:38
MS was an example, not an exception to the rule.
But it's unfortunate how inconsistent both MS and Sony are with that.
PS3 enabled virtually any SATA connected laptop hard drive, yet they lock down the Vita with their own storage while the preceding PSP used the pro-duo which was licensed under many manufacturers.
At least Nintendo was nice enough to give us an SD card slot on the Wii and 3DS and the option for local storage on the Wii U.

I'm pretty sure everyone knows by now sony is the biggest hardware proprietary *** out there. from pc's to tv's to walkman's to ps3's. they want everything in their own universe if they can help it lol.

Some rumors were circulating that sony will have backwards compatibility in the form of streaming games from their recently purchased gakai network. (for what it's worth it works pretty decently) but some think they will offer a netflix style monthly fee / game streaming service with different tiers/pricing plans. streaming eh? so that means I'd have to be always online and have a solid internet connection to play PS4 software!
/DUNDUNDUNNNNNNN
only for that Opt In service.
sure. just saying, if you bought a metric crap ton of stuff on PSN and your PS3 crapped out on you....
I would assume anyone who buys digital media on the PSN would buy another ps3 if theirs died on them and redownload all the ***they bought. so idk what your point is.

That'd still *** over anyone that had the preference of physical copies over online purchases. God forbid their PS3 bites the dust after support and print for it drop.
unfortunately the game disc is going the way of the buffalo like it or not. the next next gen will not have physical media at all if they can help it.
I'm pretty sad about it as well, but we all knew it would happen eventually.
one point about physical media for ps2/ps3 games on the ps4.
since it's not backwards compatible in the first place, a streaming service techinically isn't hurting people who prefer physical media since it would not take it anyways.
inb4 "why not backwards compatibility from the start", in which i would 90% agree with you.
but then there's the point about paying 600$ for a console etc.
Honestly, there's no reason for launch day backwards compatibility and, from a marketing stand point, I can understand why they don't do it.
You don't buy a new console for the last generation's games. No one bought a PS3 because they desperately wanted to play Final Fantasy 12 with a wireless controller. Backwards compatibility is an awesome thing, but on day one you should be buying current new titles for the console you're about to overpay for. People lording over BC is a discredit to the industry as the response should be, instead, "Yeah, well, those launch titles better be solid."
The gaming community spend a lot of time whining about the least productive things. Backwards compatibility is such a non-issue; if you want to play a PS3 game, down the 200 (or eventually 100~150 dollar) cost and you can play all of them. If you want a brand new console within the first few months of it coming out, you should be focusing on the new titles. You had a chance to get old ones and you decided not to, no reason to look back.

just pointing that out just incase anyone for a second thought Sony wouldn't also be partaking in always on XD
Wii-U keeps looking better eh?
dat edit. so you are comparing a streaming online opt in service to a locked down online only device for what reason?
then saying the wii-u (which also has a LOT of online services) is the answer?
man now i think you are just bored/trolling lol.
By Jetackuu 2013-04-08 13:41:34
lol, you lose all credibility with this, I don't even need to go into the bad joke that 8 is.
lol they've had pirated working copies of Diablo 3 within a week of it's release, you're delusional or misinformed.
knowing your track record I highly HIGHLY doubt you have used Windows 8 past a store kiosk, and I used Vista for 2 years never had a problem with it, but again, I didn't cheap out on hardware. I also said it wasn't well optimized, I wasn't defending it. It's just people treat it like it was the anti-christ of computer software, it wasn't.
and I know they had a "pirated" version of Diablo 3, and I know it also didn't have AI scripts and didn't drop gear, cause those were server side on blizzard.
So no, I'm informed, don't worry
oh that's just funny, whatever helps you sleep at night.
you're not very well informed.

though this gen shouldn't have that same problem D=

While that certainly is a valid argument, the demand for backwards compatibility is justified, especially since launch titles as of late have been rather underwhelming, as support from third party publishers tends not to bloom until at least a good 6+ months after initial release. So there needs to be some incentive and support, or otherwise seen as "comfort" to the buyers until that pendulum gains some momentum. The other end of the spectrum is demand for continued support and print for the previous generations of existing consoles. Options are always better than plans, especially when support and print for older generations of things phase out. The only viable grace retro gamers have to go by at that point is emulation.

the fact that I could play all my ps1/2 games and the new ps3 games is exactly why I own a 20 and 60gig ps3. new games don't always = good games. old games that you love will always = good games to you. besides the fact that playing a ps1 or ps2 system on a new tv will make your eyes bleed and jesus cry, saying no one buys a new system to play old games just makes you sound stupid
also physical media isn't on its way out. how the hell are the makers of ff, mw, bf and others going to charge you an arm, leg and first born to get the super extra collectors hardened gold edition that comes with a r/c helli and a coffee mug........

I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices that older games on SD resolution look utterly terrible on high def televisions, even when upscaled. I for the life of me can't figure out why this is though...
If I hook up my PS1/2 to a boob tube TV, it looks fine, but on my Sharp Aquos, it becomes video diarrhea.

I actually have a behemoth *** 30inch CRT that I keep around and ONLY play retro games on that. tried once on my 55' and .... yeah, once is all it took.
Funny thing you bring this up, cause the "Game Grumps" were talking about it, the best place to get really nice CRTs 'if you're a retro gamer' is Good Will or salvation army, they pretty much sell them for next to nothing.

pretty much has to do with aspect ratio, and a few other little things, but I'd say aspect ratio being the largest one.
I purchased a component output cable for my PS2, and it helps a little bit, but it still looks pretty rough playing Legend of Legaia on my 40" LCD...

FF12 looks like garbage on a small 20ish inch SDTV as well. An emulator is worth it, even if it has slight framerate problems during quickenings.

this is exactly why I don't play my snes or my sega in my pc room. we still have a tube tv in the living room, and that's where the nes/snes lives. we have been looking at getting a 50in or so led but I dread the day my tube units take a crap

Yeah I noticed that was the first problem, but even when I put it in the native resolution (essentially eliminating the letterbox effect), it still looked extremely blotched, jaggedy, and visually atrocious.
My guess is it must be how the display takes in conversion of dated signals.

and no, I wasn't defending Vista, again I'm saying most of the notorious problems of Vista was it how wasn't optimized. I don't have much of a problem with viewing games from my Wii emulators on lcd tvs, may just be me though.
Plus save states = /orgasm.
you could probably get the tools to fix tube tvs for cheap now, I mean they still exist as people prefer analog amps (ones with tubes) for some audio, but a lot of places are probably hawking their tools, I honestly had the chance to get some for free and passed on it.
I have some speculation on as to why it doesn't look right, but I'd rather look it up than sit here and speculate on it.

So, there is a console-war about to kick off, and a few opening rounds have been fired, with more to come in the ensuing months.
However, one of those rounds fired was aimed straight at the consumer base...huh? Thats right, Microsoft employee Adam Orth, newly crowned hero to Sony/Nintendo fans, spouted off on Twitter last night, attacking, well everyone.
Let me give some background information first. Officially, the next xbox has not been announced and all of the information pertaining to it is strictly "rumored." Two of the biggest rumors are mandatory Kinect ( Lengthy Video) and Always online. ( Always online article)
The always online rumors have really picked up of late, and after the disasterous SimCity launch, fan feedback has been largely negative towards the idea. Hostility amplified with the latest article stating that if the xbox lost internet for 3 minutes, the game would stop and players would no longer be able to play. Again, I stress that these are rumors, and they have been posted by Kotaku, not exactly reliable.
Well ladies and gentleman, hard working Adam Orth did not take too kindly to such hostility, breaking normal company policy and addressing said hostile reactions on twitter. Hilarity ensues: Huh? Even Amandarius makes more sense than this. But he wasn't done, in what will do more for Sony's PS4 than their marketing team could ever do, he posted this response to a Bioware employee:
Quote: "Sorry, I don't get the drama around having an 'always-on' console," he said. "Every device is now 'always-on'. #dealwithit" Well then, ok. So far I have been completely neutral regarding next gen, but this was almost enough to push me to pre-ordering a PS4. How is that for dealing with it, Adam?
Microsoft has sense issued an apology: Quote: "We apologize for the inappropriate comments made by an employee on Twitter yesterday. This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers. We are very sorry if this offended anyone, however we have not made any announcements about our product roadmap, and have no further comment on this matter." Not a spokesperson, ok, but still an employee, and your name is on his tweets. This is going to be a marketing disaster for Microsoft, I can just see E3 now, Sony rolls out Kevin Butler for an Adam Orth roast. Even if these rumors turn out to not be true, and they are looking more and more credible, else why would an employee even address them, Microsoft has a pretty big hole to climb out of because of this one man. I expect him to resign soon enough, too little too late. IGN Source article. Feel free to discuss, I am going to find a battery operated vacuum cleaner.
Edit - Adam Orth is a Creative Director at Microsoft.
Edited for clarification.
