iiPunch - Monk Guide

Always assumed it was just cause mnk lacks the spike war/sam can offer either through warcry/MS, or hybrid exploiting/yaeg for a final push.
Also mnk being just slightly squishier in WS sets since its not simply braindead stack WSD nyame/emp+3 in every slot, and since its not all frontloaded into the 1st hit this leads to variance in WS numbers just due to missing a hit/not getting a good MA roll, etc.
Job aint bad, the other 2 meta-picks are just more consistent and can spike quicker through JAs in a time-strict event

I think it's a little more complex. Imo the sefest DD is probably BLU, because you can reset TP, stunlock
Complex is a fitting word. BLU certainly has the utility and tools to be a safe DD job in most settings, but only if the monster is vulnerable to wind tp reset or doesn't build any resistance to Stun to begin with. From the pure DD class of jobs, in a lowman setting or simple kill fight, MNK by far will feed far less TP than a BLU and deal more damage. Being able to stun a TP move and reset TP is great, but that comes at the cost of DPS, so the balance swings more to control and less to damage. As a sole job, sure BLU is king there, but I wasn't talking only about safety perspective as one individual DD, but all things considered, including with like a SMN or BST support using a TP reset or something. Which is why I mentioned Mboze as an example.

Out of curiosity, has anyone used Onion Sword III on MNK in segments to fulfil a 2nd damage type and if so, how was the damage?

Out of curiosity, has anyone used Onion Sword III on MNK in segments to fulfil a 2nd damage type and if so, how was the damage? I used Onion Sword III on MNK in Sortie in A boss since my party told me to try it out. It needs a lot of accuracy since it only has the meager amount from /WAR. When i did hit, the max damage on FB2 i saw was around 61k and the rest were around 30-40k

Only Dhartok and partially Triboulex. Triboulex seems to resist it from time to time and it recovers faster, but I still landed some 10 sec stuns on it too when I tried to low man it few times (that was before +4 though). I believe you can stun Aita too, but only when he is in water mode after using flashflood.

Are these gearsets still up to date? Or is there a place with most up to date ones?

To be clear, we're asking if the sets with relic+4 in them are up-to-date?

You're out of line but you're right.

Thanks, now just a few questions:
When would I use specific WS?
I think all I kind of learnt is that:
- Impetus = Use Victory Smite
- Footwork = Use Tornado Kick
- Otherwise Raging Fists
But I'm seeing some decent numbers from Howling Fist as well, and not sure why or when I would use Dragon kick over Tornado, unless those are SC options.
Shijin I use on Godhands for AM3 and / or occasional top up for the TP drain, though mostly for SCing for radiance, is that fine? or should I be ignoring it since I read a lot about Shijin being rubbish

I'm gonna be sarcastic here (again) but really attempting to be informative...
Under what circumstances are you asking this question? It REALLY depends on the target, your buff levels, if anyone else is WSing, etc...
Often times the answer to this question, especially on MNK, is...how long of a SC can you make before the mob dies? It's not really a "use a single WS over and over again" kind of job most of the time. Unless you're intentionally avoiding SCs or something like that.
Yes, Shijin is very bad and shouldn't be used unless you need it in the SC you're making. Sometimes it's useful to get AM up, but often it's not worth it IMO. Dropping a 3k ***-tier WS to get 1 radiance is not an overall increase in DPS (specifically AM3). Sometimes you can make a nice 4- or 5-step radiance with a 1k Shijin in it, but again...that depends if the mob can survive that.
This question (and your gameplay) needs a lot more context. Simple answers and follow-the-guide rotations don't exist in FFXI.

Shijin can apply plague, so it has that use going for it even if its numbers aren't as high as many other WS. I like to open big fights with chi blast and a skillchain that contains Shijin to help with TP denial.

On a baseline what to just spam without thinking of sc thats not far off, though howling is generally better at low/mid buffs in place of raging due to its large innate atk boost

Yeah was sort of looking for an answer like that, thanks.
I've never taken MNK into endgame fights like Ody or Sortie because it was never well-geared or had a LUA setup, just had kenda+1 or malignance or adhemar+1 along with godhands to go on.
So far I've just use it for Ambu (mostly V2VD or E or sometimes when joining groups) or farming Lilith VE until my RDM eventually took over the damage my MNK could do.
I followed Rua's video to go with the flow of a cooldown rotation like this:
1) Impetus 3m + Victory Smite (Howling Wind before I unlocked it)
2) Footwork 1m + Tornado or Dragon Kick
3) 1m with no buffs, Raging Fists
He also mentioned during zerg situations you can just stack both and go all out, which I did on occasion when I really needed to or thought the boss will die soon within 3m or so.
Anyhow, I always liked MNK and wanted to begin using it for seg farms, sortie, specific blunt Ody bosses and maybe Dyna D as my main DD (for now at least), so last night I began setting up a new LUA.
But yeah the main question for me was when I would use which WS (which has been partially answered above now) because I'm looking at this: https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/All_Jobs_Gear_Sets/Monk
And seeing so many WS sets even though I've just been using like 4-5 WS so far based on guides.
Anyhow, one side question I had was; how do people know if they're attack capped or have high buffs? Is it just assumed when you have a GEO, BRD and COR in your party? And for MNKs specifically, do you guys have a LUA that automatically switches to mid or high buff sets or do you manually switch mode using macros/commands?

From experience, but there is also easy check that you can do. If you are "attack capped", then damage of your melee hits is only within 5% range, because your pdif is static and only the 5% randomizer is keeping you from doing the same exact damage each time. For ranged attacks there is no randomizer, so at the attack cap you will hit the same damage with each shot.

If you primarily play solo with trusts (Read: No player-controlled COR, BRD or GEO with you) then you will never encounter an attack capped situation even at the highest current gear level as long as you are fighting 119+ targets. You will come close with Berserk + full Impetus stacks + food in some cases, but for your purposes you will only be attack capped when getting the full suite of buffs from real players.
This means that most of the time if you are looking for raw WS damage then you will be looking at Tornado Kick while Footwork is up and Howling Fist when Footwork is down.
As others have said, MNK is actually on the lower end of "high damage WS" as far as jobs go so usually you are looking to make skillchains, feed low TP (Shijin, etc) and maximize your regular hit damage.

I wouldn't say that at all. MNK in general has the highest amount of high damage WSs for it's preferred weapon type. Raging, Howling, Tornado kick, Dragon kick, (Impetus)Vsmite, Maru Kala all can hit for 99999 and their median is also pretty high. Howling Fist is also potentially one of the highest WS damage in trust buffs scenario. Other jobs usually only have like 1-2 strong WSs per weapon type, often require to use specific weapon too.
Also MNK/War with Berserk, Sylvie, King, Qultada and using shell crusher should easily cap attack on many 119+ targets, but for many targets it's not worth to apply shell crusher.

It looks like a flat -50% on dmg but possibly not skillchain dmg
So whatever you are seeing double it
There is some other things at play however but they are pretty natural?
I took rdm to appollyon and when I hit the demons magic dmg was not happening
Similarly you can use banish on NW and it completely removes the -50dt because of the undead mechanic
By Dodik 2025-08-08 09:14:27
Haven't noticed anything other than the standard -50% DT.
Piercing does standard dmg for -50% dt, as does slashing. Mnk ws do not do as much as other dds with same buffs, so -50% on top of that sounds right.
Mnk will parse ok compared to everyone else, white dmg included.

Why is there so very little damage between mid buff and high buff on that monk sets page?
Why WSD head for Asuran? How about a MA piece?

Asuran is capped at 8 hits, you can't proc ma on it.

Only Malig 3% it seems, too bad. Nyame Path A +5% if you play no other jobs.

Decent trust setup for soloing Apex mobs for CP?
Currently mastering MNK as a side project. 120JP so far. Primarily in Ambuscade+2, 3/5 malignance, and Karambit.
Not looking for a gear guide, lots of room to improve and that will come slowly as spare resources roll in from main job activities.
However, spare down time I'm looking to slowly grind the CP/JP on MNK. Have been fighting Apex trying different trusts. Nothing jumped out as great.
My guess is I should be aiming for some decent SC partners, as I'm only sticking about 10k WSs. Matsui-P has been great on other jobs, but seems a bit duff with MNK, at least for me.
Any suggestions?
By spicychai 2025-08-09 09:10:47
I think I just went with full buff setup, didn't even bother using tank either since MNK steals aggro easily and is tanky.
I usually went for Colibris but I had Koru (haste), Apururu (heals, could use another healer), Qultada (rolls), Joachim (songs), didn't have Ulmia but she would be great.
Then I just did Victory Smite self-SCing which was 2 step, and kept repeating it, it was an easy one-button mash most of the time. I was doing it very lazy so didn't bother tracking buffs, just used Impetus and Footwork on CD, as well as Focus. Used Kaja Knuckles at the time, Adhemar +1 head + hand, and malignance for the rest, though don't need to be super picky, most pieces work as long as you get decent TP. Malignance should give good TP and ACC as well as defense while tanking, you can use the other pieces for Mummu has you probably are for crits / DA etc.

I'm rolling back a bit on the recommended gearsets, but still confused on what are the best sets out atm because everyone's giving different opinions.
For example, Maletaru mentioned some of the sets use relic/artifact +4 in them as if it's not a great option? Then why is it in the main gearset page on BGWiki?
I've got a MNK main in my LS that's on their prime now from having done sortie a billion times with their static and they're saying they're almost always full-time in their bhikku+3 set for TPing and WSing. On discord reddit I'm getting different feedback as well.
I'm ready to start working on my sets but I don't want to waste gil on something I might not need after all etc
