*Cough*

Sorry took me awhile to get to their thread.

It's not the Korean ISPs it's the network security folks at SE. Certain SE servers are blocking the major Korean ISP's as a counter measure against the botnets that infest all the PC bangs. I wrote a guide on alla a long time ago on how to get around it using various proxy software but honestly it go to be too complicated. Eventually I just purchases a VPN subscription and did some router major to have it only forward the FFXI data that was blocked. I can give you exact IP ranges if anyone wants.

Don't get strongvpn, their ludicrously expensive for what you need. The FFXI servers are in Japan which is a very short trip from South Korea. The Korean ISP's have kick a$$ bandwidth. StrongVPN's only affordable option is a connection to states side. Forcing all your data there is making it circumnavigate the globe twice, first from you to the USA then from the USA back to Japan. It introduces major lag (about 200~300ms additional). I found a better VPN service that lets you connect to any of their world wide VPN nodes with one small flat fee. They specialize in gaming and getting around ISP level blocks. Overplay is who you want to go with.

https://www.overplay.net/

You can have your PC pointed to most any country in the world and gets around every roadblock the ISP's could possible invent. You don't need to log into any sites to "change" your destination, their all open simultaneously. $99.95 USD for 12 months worth of access, that costs $210 USD for StrongVPN.

Code
route add -net 202.67.62.0/25 gw ${route_vpn_gateway}
route add -net 202.67.54.0/24 gw ${route_vpn_gateway}
route add -net 124.150.158.0/24 gw ${route_vpn_gateway}
route add -net 124.150.157.0/24 gw ${route_vpn_gateway}

That's my route script that's executed by OpenVPN when the connection comes up. It's got a few extra entries because I'm beta testing for FFXIV so I had to route those too.

ok so i would use this program and have it go directly to the japanese servers?

do you know offhand if i'd be allowed to use this on two separate computers simultaneously?

also, are you talking about the SmartDNS or the full VPN?

i'm completely new to all this, never used a VPN in my life.

No you can only use it once on each computer. You would need two accounts hence pay twice

actually i found this on their website:

Quote:
We allow multiple connections, but only from one site. For example, it is ok for you to connect one computer in your home to the Irish VPN server and a different computer at home to a US VPN server, or even both to the same VPN server. It is also ok for someone else in your home or a friend visiting to connect to our VPNs at the same time. We do not allow account sharing across multiple sites however. So if you were using your VPN at home and your friend logged in to one of our servers from their house then you would be breaching our terms.

i'm going to e-mail them and ask for clarification.

so are you talking the SmartDNS or the full VPN?

Yep this is what I like about them. On my linux router I'm running multiple OpenVPN connections simultaneously. One is just routing to Japan for the FFXI address while the other is routing all the Hulu / Netflix stuff to the USA.

my computers are going to be shipped out to me hopefully within the next few weeks.

i was talking with a guy over at the yongsan electronic market, and my korean is iffy at best so i'm not sure i fully understood him. but he told me that i can't simply replace the plug or add an adaptor to my computer's power supply and plug it in to a korean outlet. because of the voltage difference, he said it could cause my power supply to blow, and i have to get a 'transmitter' that will lower the voltage. is that accurate?

Depends what kind of PSU do you have?

Some power supplies are 110v only and their internals will explode if plugged into the 220v used here. Other PSU's have a small red slider in the back that lets you chose 110v or 220v, switch it appropriately and you'll be find. While the best PSU's are auto-sensing and will automatically select the proper voltage for the line. Those last PSU's tend to be kinda expensive but definitely worth it.

I am blown away by how many different people on this game live in South Korea! This is amazing.

I'm here too. I use Hello TV - cable and internet packaged together - and I have never had a problem logging into the game (except for those days where the servers have had problems or whatever). Been here for a year now. The payment system even accepts my Korean check card.

I think for just internet through Hello TV, it's something like 15000 won per month. Super cheap and IMO it's a good service.

Welcome to Korea! I'm sure you're going to have an amazing time.

both my power supplies are antec, 750 watts & 650 watts. i can't recall offhand which models exactly, nor can i remember what switches they had in the back.

Well when they arrive in country you should take a look. If your lucky then their both 220W capable and all you need to do is buy new cables that have the circular Korean plug. Don't use the two prong adapter as there is no ground line which means a surge could fry your PSU / computer.

Input Voltage on both of them is listed as 100~240 so they should work. I would really check to make sure that's them though before plugging one in. I once made the mistake of plugging in a PSU that was set to 110W into the wall. Few seconds later, loud POP and smoke came out of the PSU. I never again plugged something in without checking it.

That is partially true. I know for a fact that the service on Osan, the only service you can get actually if you live on base, blocks it by ports. We used to play the port switching game with them, would take a few days, and that port would be shut down. Did that for a month while I was on base before moving off.

Now, anything off base, you are 100% correct, it is SE blocking the Korean IP's.

One more thing too look out for. I you are living in a place that is rather old, more than likely there is no ground in the outlet system. My power strips ground light was on 100% of the time the entire 2 years I was in Korea at the place I lived. This could have consequences on your system, even with a good surge protector.

Most of the newer places have modern electrical setups with 110 grounded. As well, most of the new places will come with a good assortment of 110 and 220 plugs throughout the house.

hmm ok i looked on the antec website, and both of the power supplies that i have (i'm pretty sure anyway; will of course double check once i get them) say this:

Universal Input - works on any 100V - 240V grid

is that what you're talkin about?

Yes that means they can plug into anything. You can get a cheap multimeter to use to check the ground on your apartment, depends where your going and how old it is. Anything built in the past 6~7 years should have grounded lines and networking run throughout the apartment.
