Is a man judged by the length of his beard? He absolutely is, especially on a deserted island. Take Cast Away, for instance. In the beginning of the movie, Tom's character was inept. He couldn't catch a fish, he got stabbed by a reef and took days to make a fire.
 Look at him. Not a clue. He's probably thinking on the fact that he's going to have to suck it up and take a dump in a pit he dug with a broad stick. But years later, his beard is massive, and with it he has a wealth of knowledge. He even invented a friend! Mind you, his friend was a jerk and really judgmental, but it was a companion nonetheless. He even built a boat using sticks and part of an outhouse.  Look at how confident he is, now! This is a man who knows how to get home. When you put the two together, the choice is obvious.
